Heros severus, commonly known as the Green Severum, is a captivating freshwater cichlid native to the upper Orinoco and upper Rio Negro basins in South America. This species is recognized for its unique appearance, featuring a greenish body with distinctive vertical stripes that provide an attractive contrast, making it a favorite among aquarists. Typically, Green Severums reach a size of around 13.5 cm, with some individuals growing up to 20 cm, showcasing their robust body shape and graceful fins.

To successfully care for Green Severums, it is essential to provide optimal water parameters. They thrive in a temperature range of 24-28°C, with a pH level between 6.5 and 7.5. A minimum tank size of 200 liters is recommended to accommodate their growth and territorial nature. Green Severums are primarily herbivores, so a diet consisting of high-quality vegetable-based foods, along with occasional protein sources, is ideal. Incorporating frozen or live foods can enhance their diet and encourage vibrant colors.

When introducing Green Severums to a community tank, it is crucial to select compatible species that share similar water requirements and temperament. They generally do well with other peaceful cichlids and larger community fish, but care should be taken to monitor their behavior during the initial introduction to avoid aggression. Acclimation should be gradual, allowing them to adjust to the new environment gradually, which reduces stress.
