The Lyonsi Cichlid (Amphilophus lyonsi) is a striking freshwater fish native to Central America, particularly found in Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Known for its vibrant coloration, which can range from bright orange to deep red, this species exhibits a characteristic nuchal hump in males, adding to its visual appeal. Adult Lyonsi Cichlids typically reach sizes of up to 25 cm, making them a substantial presence in any aquarium.

In their natural habitat, Lyonsi Cichlids inhabit rocky substrates in lakes and rivers where they thrive in moderately flowing waters. They prefer areas with ample hiding spots, such as caves and crevices, which they use to establish territories and breed. This species is known for its aggressive behavior, especially during spawning periods, and it exhibits strong parental care, with both parents protecting their fry after hatching.

Behaviorally, Lyonsi Cichlids are social but territorial, often exhibiting dominance over tank mates. They are highly interactive and will display various colors and postures to communicate with each other. Their inquisitive nature makes them engaging to observe, as they explore their environment and interact with their keepers.

In terms of care, it is essential to recreate their natural environment as closely as possible to promote their health and well-being. Providing a well-structured tank with rocks, plants, and open swimming areas will help mimic their natural habitat and reduce stress levels.
Lyonsi Cichlids require a well-maintained aquarium with stable water parameters for optimal health. The ideal temperature range for this species is between 24°C to 28°C, with a pH level between 7.0 and 8.0. Regular water changes and filtration are critical to maintain water quality. These cichlids are omnivorous and should be fed a varied diet that includes high-quality pellets, frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, and plant matter to ensure balanced nutrition.

When introducing Lyonsi Cichlids to a new tank, gradual acclimation is vital. Float the sealed bag in the aquarium for about 15 minutes, then gradually mix tank water into the bag before releasing them. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to prevent the spread of disease to your existing stock. Compatibility can be a challenge due to their territorial nature; therefore, it’s recommended to house them with similarly sized, robust species to reduce aggression.

Given their size and behavior, a minimum tank size of 200 liters is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territories. Maintaining appropriate tank mates and ensuring a well-structured environment will lead to a successful and thriving aquatic community.
Lyonsi Cichlids are suitable for air freight shipping, given proper care in packing. A density of 1 fish per liter is recommended to ensure adequate space during transport. They are sensitive to temperature fluctuations, thus maintaining a stable environment within the shipping container is crucial. As a non-CITES species, there are no specific export restrictions, making them an accessible option for international wholesalers.
