The Umbrella Cichlid (Apistograma borelli) is a captivating freshwater fish native to the Amazon Basin, particularly prevalent in slow-moving waters and flooded forest areas. This small cichlid typically measures up to 8 cm in length and showcases a variety of colors, including bright yellows, blues, and subtle browns, which serve as both a form of communication and camouflage in its natural habitat. The males are particularly notable for their elaborate dorsal fins, which resemble an umbrella when fully extended, hence the species' common name.

In terms of behavior, Umbrella Cichlids are generally peaceful and can be kept in community tanks with other non-aggressive species. They exhibit interesting territorial behaviors, especially during breeding periods, where males may display vibrant colors and aggressive postures to attract mates and defend their chosen nesting areas. Being cave-spawners, they prefer to lay their eggs in sheltered spaces, often within crevices or small caves.

The natural habitat of the Umbrella Cichlid is characterized by soft, acidic waters with plenty of vegetation. They thrive in environments with dense plant cover and subdued lighting, which provides them with security and opportunities for foraging. This environment not only supports their well-being but also encourages natural behaviors, making them a favorite among aquarists looking to replicate a slice of the Amazon in their tanks.

In captivity, providing a well-structured environment that mimics their natural habitat is essential for their health and vitality. To ensure the optimal health of Umbrella Cichlids, maintaining suitable water parameters is crucial. They thrive in soft, slightly acidic water, ideally with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5. A temperature range of 24°C to 28°C is ideal, with stable conditions being crucial for their overall well-being. It is advisable to provide a minimum tank size of 100 liters to accommodate their space needs and territorial behaviors.

Feeding should consist of a varied diet that includes high-quality flake food, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia, ensuring a balanced intake of nutrients. Compatibility is generally favorable with other small, peaceful fish, though care should be taken during breeding periods, as males can become aggressive towards other males.

Before introducing them into a new environment, a proper acclimation process is essential. Gradually acclimating them to the new water conditions over several hours can minimize stress. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to monitor for diseases before placing them in a community tank. This practice helps maintain the health of the entire aquarium while providing a safe environment for the Umbrella Cichlid to thrive.

Umbrella Cichlids are relatively hardy and can be shipped effectively with proper care. Use insulated boxes with adequate oxygen and water to maintain stable conditions during transport. A packing density of 1-2 fish per liter is recommended to minimize stress. These fish are sensitive to temperature fluctuations, so maintaining a temperature between 24°C and 28°C during shipping is critical. They are not listed under CITES, making them easier to export.
