Vieja heterospilus, commonly known as the black-banded cichlid, hails from the freshwater lakes and rivers of Central America. This species is particularly admired for its striking coloration and distinct banding pattern, which can vary in intensity based on environmental factors and individual genetics. The vibrant hues and fascinating behaviors make it a popular choice among aquarium enthusiasts and wholesalers alike.

In terms of appearance, Vieja heterospilus features a robust body with prominent vertical black stripes over a lighter base color. Males typically exhibit more vivid colors and larger fins compared to females, especially during breeding season. Their elongated bodies can reach a size of up to 30 cm, making them an impressive centerpiece in larger aquarium setups.

Behaviorally, Vieja heterospilus is known for its territorial nature. They often establish a hierarchy within their social structure, and males can become particularly aggressive during the breeding period. These cichlids are intelligent and curious, frequently interacting with their environment and recognizing their caretakers. In their natural habitat, these fish thrive in warm, slow-moving waters rich in vegetation. They prefer environments with plenty of hiding spots, such as submerged logs and rocky formations, which provide security and breeding grounds. To successfully care for Vieja heterospilus, importers and retailers should maintain water parameters that closely resemble their natural habitat. The ideal temperature range is between 24°C and 28°C, with a pH level between 6.5 and 8.0. A minimum tank size of 200 liters is recommended to provide ample space for their territorial behaviors.

Feeding these cichlids requires a varied diet to ensure optimal health. A combination of high-quality pellets, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms, along with occasional vegetable matter, will meet their dietary needs. It’s advisable to feed them twice a day, ensuring that any uneaten food is promptly removed.

When introducing Vieja heterospilus to a new aquarium, acclimation is essential. Slowly acclimate them to the tank’s water conditions over several hours to reduce stress. Quarantine any new arrivals for at least two weeks before introducing them to the main tank to prevent the spread of diseases. Compatibility with other species should be carefully considered; they do best with similarly sized fish that can handle their assertive nature.

Vieja heterospilus is suitable for shipping, provided proper care is taken in packing. A density of 1-2 fish per liter is recommended to minimize stress during transit. They are sensitive to temperature fluctuations, so maintaining a stable environment is crucial. The species is not listed under CITES, making export procedures straightforward.
