KOI Angel

Pterophyllum scalare, commonly known as the KOI Angel, is a striking freshwater species native to the Amazon Basin, particularly thriving in the waters of Peru, Colombia, and Brazil. These fish are renowned for their elegant, triangular shape and flowing fins, which contribute to their graceful appearance. The KOI Angel showcases a captivating blend of colors, often featuring a mix of orange, black, and white patterns, reminiscent of the koi fish, which enhances its attractiveness in the aquarium trade.

In their natural habitat, KOI Angels inhabit swamps and flooded areas where dense vegetation provides essential cover. They prefer waters that are either clear or slightly silty, with a neutral to slightly acidic pH range. This species is often found in slow-moving waters, where they can easily forage for food among the plants. Their peaceful nature makes them a great addition to community tanks, where they can coexist harmoniously with other non-aggressive species.

Behaviorally, KOI Angels are known for their social disposition, often forming pairs during breeding seasons. They exhibit interesting behaviors, such as courtship displays and territoriality, especially when guarding their eggs. These fish thrive in environments that mimic their natural conditions, making it crucial for aquarium owners to replicate such settings to promote healthy growth and breeding.

To ensure the best care for KOI Angels, maintain water parameters within the recommended ranges: a temperature of 26.0 to 30.0 °C, a pH level between 6.0 and 7.0, and general hardness (gH) between 3 to 10 °dH. Provide a spacious tank with plenty of hiding spots created by plants and decorations, as they enjoy a well-structured environment. A minimum tank size of 100 liters is advisable to accommodate their growth and social behaviors.

Feeding KOI Angels is straightforward, as they are omnivores. A varied diet of high-quality flake food, pellets, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms will keep them healthy. Monitor their feeding to prevent overfeeding, which can lead to health issues.

When introducing KOI Angels to a community tank, ensure compatibility with other peaceful species to avoid stress. Acclimation should be gradual, using the drip method to adjust them to the new water conditions. Quarantine any new arrivals for at least two weeks to prevent the spread of diseases and parasites, ensuring a healthy environment for your existing fish.

KOI Angels are suitable for shipping due to their hardiness, but it is essential to maintain stable water temperatures during transit. Use insulated boxes and appropriate packing density to minimize stress. Ensure temperatures remain within the recommended range of 26-30 °C. This species is not listed under CITES, making export easier.
