Betta hendra, commonly known as the Betta Hendra Female, is a captivating species of labyrinth fish endemic to the Sabangau River basin in Central Kalimantan, Borneo, Indonesia. This species thrives in the unique ecosystem of peat swamp forests, where it is typically found among dense vegetation in shallow waters ranging from 5 to 50 cm deep. The Betta Hendra is particularly noteworthy for its ability to breathe air, a trait that allows it to survive in oxygen-poor environments.

Adult Betta hendra usually reach a maximum length of 4.2 cm, making them a small yet colorful addition to any aquarium. Their slender bodies are adorned with shimmering scales and delicate fins, often exhibiting a blend of vibrant colors that can vary significantly among individuals. This species is known for its striking appearance, with females typically displaying softer, more muted colors compared to their male counterparts.

Behaviorally, Betta hendra is generally peaceful, making it suitable for community tanks with other small, non-aggressive fish. They tend to be shy and prefer shaded areas with ample vegetation to hide and explore. Their natural habitat's calm waters and low light conditions should be replicated in captivity to ensure their well-being.

In the wild, Betta hendra resides in a delicate ecosystem that is increasingly threatened by habitat loss. Conservation efforts are essential to protect their natural environments and ensure the sustainability of this unique species for future generations.
The Betta Hendra Female requires specific care to thrive in an aquarium setting. Optimal water parameters include a temperature range of 24-28°C, a pH level between 6.0 and 7.5, and soft, slightly acidic water conditions. A minimum tank size of 20 liters is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and hiding spots created by plants and decorations.

Feeding should consist of high-quality flakes, frozen or live foods such as daphnia and brine shrimp, as Betta hendra are omnivorous and require a varied diet for optimal health. It’s important to feed small amounts that can be consumed within a few minutes to avoid overfeeding.

When introducing Betta hendra to a community tank, ensure compatibility with other small, non-aggressive species to minimize stress and aggression. Acclimation is crucial; use a slow drip method over several hours to adjust them to new water conditions. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to prevent the introduction of diseases into your main tank.
Betta hendra is suitable for shipping, but careful packing is essential to minimize stress. Use insulated boxes and double-bag the fish to ensure temperature stability during transit. Ideal shipping temperatures should be maintained between 24-28°C. Given their delicate nature, monitor packing density to avoid overcrowding. This species is not listed under CITES, simplifying export regulations.
