This large mouthbrooding betta is native to northwestern Borneo. Males can show a red body, red gill-cover patch and a dark eyespot in the dorsal fin. It inhabits sheltered rainforest pools and quiet river sections. A commercial pair designation does not establish that the fish have formed a compatible breeding pair.
Species guidance gives 20-25 C and pH 4.0-6.0 in very soft water. Use quiet, shaded, covered accommodation with gentle filtration and air access. Offer small live or frozen foods and verify prepared-feed acceptance. Monitor pair behaviour closely: randomly selected partners and additional males may fight. Match transfer to measured holding conditions.
