The Shadow Catfish (Pelteobagrus ornatus) is a captivating freshwater species native to Southeast Asia, particularly found in the rivers and streams of Indonesia. This species is notable for its striking dark coloration, which serves as excellent camouflage among the riverbed substrates. Its elongated body and long whisker-like barbels contribute to its distinctive appearance, allowing it to forage effectively in its natural habitat.

In terms of behavior, the Shadow Catfish is generally peaceful and tends to exhibit a shy demeanor, often hiding among rocks and plants. This species is primarily nocturnal, becoming more active during the night when it searches for food. Its diet consists mainly of small invertebrates and detritus, making it an important part of the ecosystem as a scavenger.

Habitat-wise, Shadow Catfish prefer slow-moving waters with plenty of hiding spots, such as submerged logs and dense vegetation. They thrive in environments with soft substrates, which facilitate their foraging habits. The species prefers slightly acidic to neutral water conditions, reflecting its natural riverine habitat where such parameters are common.

Overall, the Shadow Catfish is not only visually appealing but also plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of its ecosystem, making it a valuable addition to any freshwater aquarium setup.
For optimal care of Shadow Catfish, it is essential to maintain water parameters that closely resemble their natural habitat. The ideal temperature range is between 24°C and 28°C, with a pH level of 6.5 to 7.5. Regular water changes and filtration are crucial to ensure a clean environment. This species is sensitive to water quality, so ammonia and nitrite levels must be kept at zero.

Feeding should consist of a varied diet that includes high-quality sinking pellets, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, and crustaceans. This will ensure proper nutrition and encourage natural behaviors. Shadow Catfish are generally compatible with other peaceful freshwater species, but it is wise to avoid aggressive tankmates that may stress them.

Acclimation is critical when introducing Shadow Catfish to a new tank. A slow drip acclimation method is recommended to reduce stress. Quarantine of new arrivals for at least two weeks is advisable to prevent the introduction of diseases into the main aquarium. Observing their behavior during this period will also help in ensuring they adjust well to their new environment.
Shadow Catfish are suitable for shipping due to their hardy nature, but care must be taken to maintain appropriate temperature ranges during transport. Packing density should be moderate to allow for adequate oxygen exchange, ideally with 1-2 fish per liter of water. They are sensitive to temperature fluctuations; thus, maintaining a stable temperature between 24°C and 28°C during shipping is crucial. This species does not have a CITES status, allowing for easier export.
