The Cobalt Discus (Symphysodon aequifasciata) is a visually striking freshwater fish native to the Amazon River Basin. Characterized by its vivid blue coloration and round body, this species is a favorite among aquarists. The Cobalt Discus exhibits a distinct pattern of vertical stripes that can vary in intensity, depending on the individual and environmental conditions. This species is not only an aesthetic addition to aquariums but also showcases fascinating social behaviors, making them a unique choice for both novice and experienced fish keepers.

In the wild, Cobalt Discus inhabit slow-moving waters, such as rivers and flooded forests, where they seek refuge among submerged vegetation and driftwood. Their natural habitat offers plenty of cover, which is essential for their well-being. This species thrives in warm, soft, and acidic waters, conditions that closely mimic the tropical environments of their native regions. The Cobalt Discus is known for its communal nature, often forming tight-knit groups that exhibit intricate social interactions.

Behaviorally, Cobalt Discus are peaceful and typically coexist well with other non-aggressive species. They are known to establish hierarchies within their groups and can show strong pair bonding during breeding. Their gentle demeanor makes them an excellent choice for community tanks, provided the tank mates are compatible.

In terms of care, it’s essential to replicate their natural conditions as closely as possible to encourage healthy growth and breeding. Providing a spacious, well-planted aquarium with gentle filtration will help maintain water quality and create a comfortable environment for these beautiful fish.
To successfully care for Cobalt Discus, it is crucial to maintain specific water parameters. Ideal temperature ranges from 28°C to 32°C, with a pH level between 6.0 and 7.5. These fish prefer soft water with low hardness, so regular water changes and monitoring are essential. A minimum tank size of 200 liters is recommended to provide ample space for swimming and social interactions.

Feeding Cobalt Discus requires a varied diet to ensure optimal health. A combination of high-quality pellets, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, and vegetable matter will keep them well-nourished. It’s important to feed them small amounts multiple times a day rather than one large feeding.

Compatibility is key when selecting tank mates. Cobalt Discus thrive in peaceful community tanks with other gentle species. Avoid aggressive or overly boisterous fish, as they can stress the Discus. Acclimation should be gradual to minimize shock; use the drip method for at least two hours before introducing them to the main tank. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to prevent the spread of disease and ensure the health of your existing stock.
Cobalt Discus are suitable for shipping, but care must be taken to maintain stable temperatures during transit. Use insulated containers and heat packs if necessary to keep the temperature within the ideal range of 28°C to 30°C. Packing density should be moderate to reduce stress during transport. As a CITES Appendix II species, proper documentation may be required for international shipments.
