Leopard Discus

The Leopard Discus (Symphysodon aequifasciata) is a striking freshwater fish native to the Amazon River basin. The Leopard Discus is characterized by its circular body shape and laterally compressed form, which allows it to navigate through the dense underwater vegetation of its natural habitat.

In the wild, Leopard Discus inhabit slow-moving waters, such as floodplains and lakes, often surrounded by lush aquatic plants. They thrive in warm, acidic waters with plenty of cover, which provides them with both safety and feeding opportunities. Social creatures by nature, Leopard Discus are often found in groups, displaying a fascinating range of behaviors that include cooperative schooling and territorial displays during breeding.

Leopard Discus are also known for their unique breeding behavior. They exhibit parental care, where both male and female take turns guarding and caring for their fry. To ensure the health and well-being of Leopard Discus, it is crucial to maintain optimal water parameters. The recommended temperature range is between 28-30°C, with a pH level of 6.0 to 7.0. Regular water changes are necessary to keep nitrate levels low, as this species is sensitive to poor water quality.

Feeding should consist of a varied diet that includes high-quality pellets, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms, ensuring a balanced intake of nutrients. Leopard Discus can be somewhat shy, so it is best to introduce them to established tanks with peaceful tank mates like tetras or corydoras. Acclimation should be done slowly by floating the bag in the aquarium and gradually mixing tank water into the bag over several hours.

Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to prevent the introduction of diseases into your main tank. Keep an eye out for signs of stress or illness, as Leopard Discus can be sensitive to changes in their environment.

Leopard Discus are suitable for shipping under controlled conditions. Ensure that they are packed in oxygenated bags with sufficient water to minimize stress during transit. It's recommended to maintain a temperature range of 25-28°C during shipping. CITES status is not applicable to this species, but proper documentation may be required for export.
