The Striped Leporinus (Metynnis fasciatus) is a captivating freshwater fish native to the Amazon Basin. Recognizable by its bold black and yellow stripes, this species exhibits a streamlined body that can reach lengths of up to 15 cm (6 inches). Its distinct coloration not only makes it an attractive addition to aquariums but also serves as a form of camouflage in its natural habitat among the dense aquatic vegetation.

In the wild, Striped Leporinus typically inhabits slow-moving rivers, streams, and floodplains, where they thrive in schools. This schooling behavior reflects their natural instinct for safety in numbers, and it is crucial for their wellbeing in captivity. They prefer environments with ample cover, such as submerged plants and driftwood, which mimic their natural surroundings and reduce stress levels.

The Striped Leporinus is known for its lively and inquisitive nature. They are diurnal, meaning they are most active during the day, and exhibit playful behaviors that can be quite entertaining to observe. While generally peaceful, they can become territorial, especially as they mature, and may exhibit mild aggression towards smaller tank mates, so careful selection of tank companions is advisable.

Their adaptability to varying water conditions makes them a suitable choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists. With proper care, these fish can thrive in a well-maintained aquarium setting, providing a dynamic and colorful presence in any freshwater tank.
To successfully keep Striped Leporinus, it is essential to maintain stable water parameters. A temperature range of 24-28°C (75-82°F) is ideal, with a pH level between 6.0 and 7.5. Regular water changes and filtration will help maintain water quality, as they are sensitive to poor conditions. The minimum tank size for a small school of Striped Leporinus should be at least 150 liters (40 gallons) to allow for adequate swimming space and social interaction.

Diet-wise, Striped Leporinus are omnivorous and thrive on a varied diet. High-quality flakes, pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms will keep them healthy and vibrant. It’s advisable to feed them small portions multiple times a day, rather than one large feeding, to mimic their natural foraging behavior.

Compatibility with other species is key; they do well in community tanks with similarly sized fish but may nip at the fins of slower, long-finned species. Acclimation should be done gradually; introducing them to a new tank should involve floating the bag in the tank for about 15 minutes, followed by a slow addition of tank water to the bag over the course of an hour. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to monitor for disease before adding them to the main tank.
The Striped Leporinus is well-suited for shipping due to its hardy nature. When packing for export, a density of 5-10 fish per liter is recommended, depending on size. They are sensitive to temperature fluctuations; therefore, maintaining a stable temperature between 24-28°C (75-82°F) during transport is crucial. Currently, there are no CITES restrictions on this species, allowing for straightforward export procedures.
