The Kohaku (KOI) Red White Swordtail, scientifically known as Xiphophorus helleri, is a striking freshwater fish that captivates aquarists with its vivid coloration and unique patterns. This species features a brilliant combination of red and white hues, resembling the traditional Japanese Koi, which adds an aesthetic appeal to any aquarium setup. Native to regions in North and Central America, the swordtail is a live-bearer, known for its adaptability and ease of care, making it a favorite among both novice and experienced aquarists.

In terms of physical appearance, the males are distinguished by their elongated tails, which develop a sword-like projection, while females possess a more rounded body shape. This species exhibits a range of color morphs, but the Kohaku variant stands out due to its distinctive red and white patterning. The fish typically reach a maximum size of around 10 cm, making them suitable for community tanks where they can thrive alongside other small to medium-sized tank mates.

Behaviorally, Kohaku Swordtails are friendly and social fish that enjoy swimming in groups. They are active swimmers, often seen darting around the tank and exploring their environment. This species is generally peaceful, although males can be territorial during breeding. In their natural habitat, they inhabit freshwater streams and rivers, preferring areas with abundant vegetation where they can find shelter and breeding sites.

Kohaku Swordtails thrive in well-planted aquariums with plenty of open swimming space. They prefer warm water temperatures and slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. With proper care, these fish can live for several years, making them a rewarding addition to any freshwater aquarium.

To ensure the health and well-being of Kohaku Swordtails, maintain water parameters in the range of 24-28°C with a pH of 6.8-7.5. The tank should have a minimum size of 100 liters to allow ample swimming space. Provide a filtration system to keep the water clean and oxygenated, as swordtails are sensitive to poor water quality. Regular water changes (about 25% weekly) are crucial to maintain optimal conditions.

Feeding Kohaku Swordtails is straightforward as they are omnivorous. A balanced diet consisting of high-quality flake food, freeze-dried or frozen brine shrimp, and vegetable matter such as spirulina will keep them healthy and vibrant. It's also beneficial to supplement their diet with live foods occasionally.

In terms of compatibility, Kohaku Swordtails do well with other peaceful community fish, including tetras, guppies, and other livebearers. However, avoid housing them with aggressive species that may harass them. Acclimate new arrivals slowly to prevent stress, introducing them gradually to the main tank.

It's advisable to quarantine new fish for at least two weeks before introducing them to the main tank to prevent the spread of diseases. This practice helps ensure a healthy and thriving aquarium environment.

Kohaku Swordtails are suitable for shipping due to their hardiness. When packing, ensure a density of no more than 1 fish per 1.5 liters to reduce stress during transport. Maintain a shipping temperature between 24-28°C to ensure their well-being. This species is not listed under CITES, simplifying export regulations.
