Pineapple Swordtail

The Pineapple Swordtail (Xiphophorus helleri) is a captivating freshwater fish known for its striking coloration and lively personality. Native to the waters of North and Central America, particularly from Veracruz, Mexico to northwestern Honduras, this species thrives in a variety of aquatic environments, including lakes, rivers, and lagoons. Its adaptability to both freshwater and brackish waters makes it a popular choice among aquarium enthusiasts.

In terms of appearance, the Pineapple Swordtail exhibits a range of colors, with males often showcasing bright yellow to orange hues accented by distinctive black spots, resembling a pineapple's exterior. The elongated tail fin, or sword, is particularly notable and is more pronounced in males, giving them a unique charm. Females tend to be larger and less colorful but are equally captivating with their subtle tones and full bodies.

Behaviorally, Pineapple Swordtails are social fish that prefer to be in groups, making them excellent additions to community tanks. They are known for their playful and active nature, often swimming in schools and exploring their environment. Their compatibility with other species, including other livebearers and peaceful fish, further enhances their appeal for aquarium settings.

In their natural habitat, these fish inhabit shallow waters with plenty of vegetation, providing shelter and breeding grounds. The presence of plants not only offers refuge but also contributes to their diet, as they graze on algae and plant matter. This natural behavior makes them relatively easy to care for in a domestic aquarium setting, as they adapt well to a variety of conditions.

To successfully maintain Pineapple Swordtails in an aquarium, keep the water temperature between 22°C and 28°C, with a pH level ranging from 6.5 to 8.0. These fish thrive in well-filtered tanks with moderate water movement and plenty of hiding spots provided by plants and decorations. A minimum tank size of 80 liters is recommended to accommodate their social nature, allowing for a group to flourish.

Feeding Pineapple Swordtails is straightforward, as they are omnivorous and will accept a variety of foods. A balanced diet should include high-quality flake or pellet food, supplemented with live or frozen options like brine shrimp and daphnia, as well as vegetable matter. Regular feeding will ensure their health and vibrant coloration.

Compatibility is high with other peaceful species, though caution should be taken with more aggressive fish. During acclimation, slowly introduce them to a new environment by floating the sealed bag in the tank for about 15-20 minutes, then gradually mixing tank water into the bag. Quarantine new arrivals for 2-3 weeks to prevent the spread of disease and ensure their health before introducing them to the main tank.

Pineapple Swordtails are suitable for shipping due to their hardiness. Pack them in oxygenated bags, ensuring a density of no more than 5-6 fish per liter of water. Maintain temperatures between 22°C and 28°C during transit to minimize stress. As a non-CITES species, they do not have specific export restrictions, making them an excellent choice for wholesalers and retailers.
