Boehlkea fredcochui, commonly known as the Blue King Tetra or Cochu's blue tetra, is a small freshwater fish native to the Amazon Basin. This species is revered for its vibrant blue coloration, which is particularly pronounced in males, making them a popular choice in home aquariums. They are a part of the characin family and are known for their peaceful demeanor, making them suitable for community tanks.

In terms of appearance, Blue King Tetras exhibit a slender body shape with a striking blue hue that glimmers under light. Mature males display more vivid colors and are generally more slender than females, which are rounder and larger. These tetras also possess a distinctive black spot on their dorsal fin, adding to their visual appeal. Behaviorally, Blue King Tetras are social fish that prefer to be kept in groups of six or more. They thrive in soft to moderately hard water, so monitoring these conditions will help ensure their health and vitality. Regular water changes and a good filtration system are recommended to keep the water clean and free from toxins.

Feeding Blue King Tetras is relatively straightforward, as they are omnivorous. A balanced diet consisting of high-quality flake food, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia, will promote optimal growth and coloration. It's essential to feed them small amounts multiple times a day to mimic their natural foraging behavior.

In terms of compatibility, Blue King Tetras are peaceful and can be housed with other small, non-aggressive fish. Avoid keeping them with larger or more aggressive species that may view them as prey. Acclimation should be done gradually to minimize stress; floating the sealed bag in the tank for about 15 minutes before releasing them can help equalize temperatures. Blue King Tetras are suitable for shipping due to their hardiness. When packing, a density of 1 fish per liter is recommended to minimize stress. Ensure that the temperature during transport remains stable between 24°C and 28°C, as extreme fluctuations can be detrimental. These fish are not listed under CITES, making them easier to export.
