Acanthastrea lordhowensis, commonly known as the Acan Lord, is a member of the Lobophylliidae family and is characterized by its large, fleshy polyps that can display a range of vibrant colors, including red, green, and blue. These corals are typically found in shallow reefs of the Indo-Pacific Ocean, where they thrive in warm, clear waters. Their unique morphology, with broad, plate-like structures, allows them to capture light efficiently while providing ample surface area for feeding.

In terms of natural history, Acanthastrea lordhowensis is a hardy species that can adapt to various environmental conditions, though they prefer stable conditions with moderate light and water flow. This coral species often forms colonies, creating attractive formations that can enhance the aesthetic appeal of any reef aquarium. They are known for their aggressive feeding behavior, utilizing their large polyps to capture zooplankton and organic matter from the water column.

Behaviorally, Acanthastrea Lord Red exhibits a nocturnal feeding pattern, extending its polyps during the night to maximize its feeding opportunities. During the day, they rely on photosynthesis from their symbiotic zooxanthellae, making them a semi-photosynthetic species. This dual approach allows them to thrive in various settings, making them popular among aquarists.

Habitat-wise, they are often found on the reef slopes and lagoons, where they can receive both direct sunlight and moderate water movement. Their resilience and adaptability to different light and flow conditions have contributed to their widespread presence in the Indo-Pacific region. As a result, they are often sought after for both commercial and hobbyist aquarium setups.
For optimal care, Acanthastrea lordhowensis requires stable water parameters, ideally with a temperature range of 24-28°C and a pH level between 8.1-8.4. Salinity should be maintained between 1.020 and 1.025 ppt to ensure proper osmotic balance. Providing moderate water flow is essential, as it aids in feeding and helps remove waste products.

Regarding feeding, these corals benefit from regular supplementation of zooplankton and high-quality coral foods, especially during their nocturnal feeding periods. While they obtain some of their nutrients from zooxanthellae, additional feeding will promote growth and vibrant coloration.

In terms of compatibility, Acanthastrea Lord Red can coexist with various reef inhabitants but should be kept away from more aggressive species that may outcompete them for space and resources. Acclimation should be gradual; it's advisable to introduce them slowly to their new environment to minimize stress. Quarantine is recommended for new arrivals to prevent the introduction of pests or diseases to the main display tank.
Acanthastrea lordhowensis is suitable for shipping due to its hardiness. It should be packed in secure containers with adequate water and oxygen supply. A packing density of 1-2 corals per liter is recommended to reduce stress during transit. The ideal shipping temperature is between 20-25°C, as extremes can affect coral health. This species is not listed under CITES, facilitating easier export.
