Euphyllia glabrescens, commonly known as the Tigger or Torch Coral, is a large-polyped stony coral belonging to the Euphylliidae family. This species is renowned for its long, sweeping tentacles that are tipped with potent cnidocytes, giving it a mesmerizing appearance reminiscent of flickering flames. The Tigger Torch Coral typically showcases bright hues of green, yellow, and purple, making it a favorite among marine aquarium enthusiasts.

In the wild, Torch Corals are commonly found in the reefs of the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around Indonesia and Fiji. They thrive in shallow waters where sunlight penetrates, allowing for optimal photosynthesis. Their natural habitat consists of rocky substrates and coral reefs, where they can attach themselves securely while extending their tentacles to capture prey and absorb nutrients.

Behaviorally, Euphyllia glabrescens is known for its aggressive feeding habits, utilizing its long tentacles to capture small zooplankton and organic debris. They also engage in a fascinating symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae, photosynthetic algae that live within their tissues, providing them with essential nutrients and vibrant colors.

Torch Corals are not only visually striking but also play an important role in the marine ecosystem. They provide habitat and shelter for various marine organisms, contributing to the overall biodiversity of coral reef systems. As a result, they are increasingly sought after in the aquarium trade, although sustainable collection practices are essential to ensure their survival in the wild.
To successfully care for Tigger Torch Corals in a marine aquarium, it is important to maintain stable water parameters. The ideal temperature range is between 24-28°C, with a salinity level of 1.023-1.025 ppt. Maintaining a pH level of 8.1-8.4 is also crucial for their health. As a photosynthetic species, they require moderate to high light levels, ideally provided through LED or metal halide lighting.

Feeding Torch Corals involves offering small pieces of meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, or specialized coral foods several times a week. Ensuring that they receive adequate food will promote healthy growth and vibrant coloration. Compatibility in a community tank is generally good, but caution should be exercised as they can be aggressive towards other corals due to their sweeper tentacles, which can sting nearby competitors.

Acclimation is vital when introducing Tigger Torch Corals to a new environment. A slow drip acclimation process over several hours is recommended to minimize stress. It is also advisable to quarantine new specimens before introducing them to the main tank to prevent the spread of potential diseases or pests. Regular observation and maintenance of water quality will further enhance their resilience and overall health.
Tigger Torch Corals are suitable for shipping, but careful packing is essential to ensure their survival during transit. They should be securely packed in foam-lined boxes with adequate water and oxygen to maintain optimal conditions. The ideal temperature for shipping should be maintained between 22-25°C to prevent thermal shock. As a species listed under CITES, it is important to comply with all regulations regarding its export.
