Euphyllia glabrescens, commonly known as the Torch Coral Cream, is a stunning species of large-polyped stony coral that belongs to the family Euphylliidae. This species is renowned for its long, flowing tentacles that resemble torches, providing a mesmerizing display in home aquariums. The tentacles are tipped with potent cnidocytes, which not only enhance its beauty but also serve as a defense mechanism against potential threats, making it an intriguing addition to any marine setup.

Torch Coral typically exhibits a cream coloration, but it can also display a variety of hues depending on environmental factors and lighting conditions. In nature, this coral can be found in shallow reef habitats throughout the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around Indonesia and Fiji. The Torch Coral thrives in areas with moderate water movement and ample light, where it can fully extend its tentacles to capture plankton and small particles from the water column.

Behaviorally, Torch Corals are known for their aggressive tendencies, particularly toward other corals. Their long sweeper tentacles can reach out to sting neighboring corals, establishing a territory in the crowded reef environment. Despite their aggressive nature, they can coexist with certain species when given enough space and careful placement within the aquarium. As a hardy species, they adapt well to various aquarium conditions, making them popular among both novice and experienced aquarists.

In terms of reproductive behavior, Torch Corals can propagate both sexually and asexually. Fragmentation is a common method of asexual reproduction, where broken pieces can develop into new colonies. This adaptability contributes to their popularity, as aquarists can easily propagate their specimens for sale or personal enjoyment.

To successfully care for Euphyllia glabrescens, maintaining optimal water parameters is crucial. The ideal temperature range is between 24-28°C, with a salinity of 1.020-1.025 ppt and a pH level between 8.1 and 8.4. Regular water changes and proper filtration can help maintain these parameters, ensuring a stable environment for the coral.

Torch Corals are photosynthetic, relying primarily on light for energy, but they also benefit from supplemental feeding. Providing a varied diet of fine particulate foods, such as zooplankton and specially formulated coral foods, can enhance their growth and coloration. It's recommended to feed them 2-3 times a week, especially in lower light conditions.

In terms of compatibility, it’s important to house Torch Corals with non-aggressive tank mates to prevent territorial disputes. They should ideally be placed in an area with moderate water flow and ample light. Acclimation is critical, as sudden changes in salinity or temperature can stress the coral. Gradual acclimation over several hours is recommended.

Quarantine new specimens before introducing them to a display tank to prevent the spread of diseases or pests. Monitor for any signs of stress or aggression during the initial introduction phase, ensuring adequate space between the Torch Coral and other inhabitants.

Torch Coral Cream is suitable for shipping, provided that proper precautions are taken. It should be packed securely to prevent damage during transit, with a recommended density of 1-2 pieces per liter of water. The coral is sensitive to temperature fluctuations, so shipping should occur within a temperature range of 22-26°C. This species is not listed under CITES, simplifying export processes.
