The Bright Orange Plate Coral (Fungia spp.) is a captivating species known for its brilliant coloration and unique morphology. Typically found in shallow reef environments, this coral exhibits a hard, plate-like structure that can measure up to 30 cm in diameter, making it a standout in any aquarium. Its bright orange hue not only adds visual appeal but also provides essential habitat for various marine organisms.

This species is predominantly found in the Coral Triangle, particularly around Indonesia, where it thrives in warm, shallow waters with ample sunlight. The Bright Orange Plate Coral is a solitary coral, meaning it grows independently rather than forming colonies. Its flat, disc-like shape allows it to effectively capture sunlight and nutrients from the surrounding water, which is vital for its growth and health.

In terms of behavior, these corals are primarily photosynthetic, utilizing symbiotic algae known as zooxanthellae. These algae live within the coral’s tissues and provide energy through photosynthesis, while the coral offers protection and access to sunlight. Bright Orange Plate Corals also have a unique ability to expand their tissue to maximize surface area for light absorption during the day and retract at night for protection against predators.

The ideal habitat for the Bright Orange Plate Coral includes sandy substrates and areas with moderate water movement. They often settle on the seafloor, where they can access both light and nutrients from the water column, making them an integral part of the reef ecosystem.
When caring for Bright Orange Plate Coral in an aquarium setting, maintaining optimal water parameters is crucial. The ideal temperature range is between 24-28°C, with a salinity level of 32-36 ppt. The pH should be maintained between 8.1 and 8.4 to ensure a healthy environment for growth. It is important to provide ample lighting, as these corals rely on photosynthesis; using high-output LED or metal halide lights can help achieve this.

Feeding these corals is relatively straightforward. While they are primarily photosynthetic, supplemental feeding can enhance growth and coloration. Offering finely chopped meaty foods or specialized coral foods a few times a week can be beneficial. In terms of compatibility, Bright Orange Plate Corals are generally peaceful and can coexist with many fish species and invertebrates, but care should be taken near aggressive corals.

Acclimation is critical for the survival of these corals post-import. Gradually introducing them to the tank environment over several hours can minimize stress. A quarantine period of at least two weeks is recommended to observe for any signs of disease or pests before introducing them to the main display tank.
Bright Orange Plate Corals are suitable for shipping with proper care. They should be securely packed to minimize movement during transit, using foam or bubble wrap to protect their delicate structures. It's essential to maintain stable temperatures between 22-26°C during shipping to prevent thermal stress. CITES status for this species is not applicable, but ensure compliance with local regulations regarding coral trade.
