Flame Angel

The Flame Angel (Centropyge loriculus) is a small marine fish belonging to the family Pomacanthidae, commonly found in the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific region. This species is renowned for its brilliant orange and blue coloration, which makes it a popular choice among aquarists. The vibrant hues serve as both a form of communication and a warning to potential predators, showcasing their vitality and health. Adult Flame Angels typically reach a maximum size of about 10 cm, making them an ideal addition to both small and large aquariums alike.

Flame Angels are primarily found in shallow waters, often inhabiting coral-rich environments where they can find ample hiding spots. This species is known for its curious and somewhat territorial behavior, frequently exploring its surroundings and defending its chosen territory against other fish. Despite their bold nature, Flame Angels can exhibit a shy demeanor when first introduced to a new environment, requiring patience from their caretakers during the acclimation process.

In terms of diet, Flame Angels are omnivorous, thriving on a varied diet that includes algae, zooplankton, and small invertebrates. In captivity, they should be offered a balanced diet of high-quality pellets, frozen foods, and fresh vegetables to ensure optimal health. Their natural feeding behavior involves grazing on algae, which helps to maintain a clean aquarium environment.

Flame Angels are also known to play a role in the ecosystem by contributing to the health of coral reefs through their grazing activities. They are often found in pairs or small groups, adding to the dynamic and lively ambiance of marine aquariums. The Flame Angel's stunning appearance and engaging behavior make it a favorite among both hobbyists and professionals in the aquarium trade.

To successfully care for Flame Angels, importers and retailers should ensure that water conditions approximate their natural habitat. Ideal water parameters include a temperature range of 24°C to 28°C, salinity levels between 1.020 and 1.025 ppt, and a pH between 8.1 and 8.4. A minimum tank size of 150 liters is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territories.

Feeding should consist of a varied diet, including high-quality marine flakes, frozen brine shrimp, and algae-based foods. Regular feeding, ideally two to three times a day, will promote health and vibrant coloration. Compatibility with other species is generally good, although caution should be exercised when introducing them into community tanks, as they can display territorial behavior towards similar-sized or colored fish.

Acclimation is crucial for Flame Angels; a slow drip acclimation method is recommended to minimize stress. Quarantine new arrivals for at least 2-4 weeks to monitor for any signs of disease before introducing them to display tanks. Regular water quality checks and maintenance will enhance their longevity and well-being in captivity.

Flame Angels are moderately sensitive to temperature fluctuations and should be shipped with care. Packing density should allow for adequate space and water circulation to minimize stress during transit. It is advisable to maintain shipping temperatures between 22°C and 26°C. As a species not listed under CITES, they have fewer restrictions for international export; however, compliance with local regulations is essential.
