The Assorted Wrasses, scientifically known as Halichoeres melanurus, are a captivating species native to the western Pacific, extending from Japan to Samoa and Tonga, and down to the Great Barrier Reef. These fish are commonly found in rocky shorelines and coral reefs, thriving at depths ranging from 1 to 15 meters. Known for their striking coloration and lively behavior, they are a favorite among aquarium enthusiasts and are often showcased in public aquaria.

Physically, Assorted Wrasses can reach a maximum length of 12 cm (approximately 4.7 inches). Their vibrant hues and distinctive patterns make them visually appealing. The males are particularly noted for their bright colors, which they use to attract females during breeding. This species exhibits a remarkable ability to change its colors and patterns based on its surroundings, adding an extra layer of intrigue to their display in aquariums.

Behaviorally, these wrasses are generally social creatures, often seen foraging in groups. They are known for their inquisitive nature, frequently darting in and out of crevices in the reef. Their diet primarily consists of small invertebrates and crustaceans, which they hunt with agility. A pH level between 8.1 and 8.4 is also recommended to ensure optimal health. A minimum tank size of 100 liters is advisable to provide sufficient swimming space and reduce territorial disputes.

Feeding these wrasses involves a varied diet rich in protein. They thrive on high-quality flakes, frozen foods, and live prey, including brine shrimp and mysis shrimp. Regular feeding will keep them healthy and vibrant. Compatibility is usually good with other reef-safe species, but caution should be taken when introducing them to aggressive tank mates.

Acclimation is critical for Assorted Wrasses. A slow acclimation process helps reduce stress and improves survival rates. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to monitor for any signs of disease before introducing them to the main tank. Maintaining good water quality and providing hiding spots will also contribute to their overall well-being.

Assorted Wrasses are suitable for shipping due to their hardiness. They should be packed with adequate space to move, ideally with a density of 1-2 fish per liter to minimize stress. Temperature should be maintained between 22°C and 26°C during transport. These fish are not listed under CITES, which facilitates smoother export processes.
