Needle Algae (Caulerpa Sertularoides) is a fascinating marine macroalga that thrives in the warm, shallow waters of tropical reefs. This distinctive species is characterized by its long, needle-like fronds that can grow up to several meters in length, creating a striking visual display in aquariums. Needle Algae is often found in sandy substrates and amongst coral reefs, where it plays a crucial role in the ecosystem by providing shelter and food for various marine organisms.

In terms of appearance, Needle Algae exhibits a vibrant green color, which can vary in shades depending on the water quality and light conditions. Its fine, delicate structure mimics the look of underwater grass, making it an attractive addition to aquascapes. This species is particularly appreciated for its ability to enhance the natural beauty of reef tanks while contributing to overall ecosystem health.

Behaviorally, Needle Algae is known for its photosynthetic capabilities, absorbing sunlight to produce energy and oxygen. It can form dense colonies that not only support small fish and invertebrates but also assist in nutrient cycling within the aquarium environment. Needle Algae prefers well-lit areas and can adapt to varying light conditions, although optimal growth is observed under moderate to high lighting.

Habitat-wise, Needle Algae is native to the Coral Triangle, primarily found in Indonesia, where it flourishes in nutrient-rich waters. It is often associated with coral reefs, providing a habitat for numerous species while helping to stabilize the marine ecosystem. Its presence indicates a healthy environment, making it a valuable specimen for marine enthusiasts and aquarists alike.

To ensure the successful care of Needle Algae, maintain water parameters that closely mimic its natural habitat. Ideal temperature ranges from 24°C to 28°C, with stable salinity levels between 30-35 ppt. The pH should be kept between 7.5 and 8.5 for optimal growth. Needle Algae thrives in well-lit conditions, so provide at least 8 to 10 hours of light daily, preferably using LED or T5 lighting.

Feeding Needle Algae can be minimal, as it primarily relies on photosynthesis for energy. However, providing additional nutrients through liquid fertilizers or CO2 supplementation can enhance growth. Compatibility-wise, this species is generally peaceful and can coexist with a variety of reef-safe fish and invertebrates, though care should be taken to avoid herbivorous species that may consume it.

During acclimation, introduce Needle Algae gently by floating the sealed bag in the aquarium for about 30 minutes to equalize temperatures, then slowly mix tank water into the bag before releasing it. Quarantine is recommended for all new arrivals to monitor for pests or diseases that could affect the main display. Regular pruning may be necessary to prevent overgrowth and maintain aesthetic appeal.

Needle Algae is suitable for shipping due to its robust nature. It should be packed securely with adequate moisture to maintain health during transit. Recommended packing density is moderate to ensure airflow while preventing damage. This species is sensitive to extreme temperature fluctuations, so maintain a stable environment of 22°C to 25°C during shipping. Currently, there are no CITES restrictions on Needle Algae.
