Hydnophora microconos, commonly known as Green Horn Coral, is a fascinating stony coral that thrives in the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific region. Characterized by its distinctive horn-like projections, this coral exhibits a vibrant green coloration that makes it a striking addition to any marine aquarium. Its unique morphology not only serves as an aesthetic feature but also plays a crucial role in its survival by providing a habitat for various marine organisms.

This species typically inhabits shallow reef environments, where it forms large colonies. Green Horn Coral is a hardy species that can tolerate a range of environmental conditions, although it thrives best in stable conditions with adequate light and water movement. Its growth pattern is often encrusting or branching, allowing it to compete effectively for space on the reef.

Behaviorally, the Green Horn Coral is a passive species that relies heavily on photosynthesis, utilizing symbiotic algae called zooxanthellae to convert sunlight into energy. This relationship not only provides nourishment but also contributes to the coral's vibrant coloration. In addition to photosynthesis, the coral can capture plankton and small particles from the water, supplementing its dietary needs.

In terms of reproduction, Hydnophora microconos primarily reproduces through asexual fragmentation, although it can also reproduce sexually. This adaptability allows it to thrive in varying environmental conditions, making it an essential component of the reef ecosystem.
When caring for Green Horn Coral, maintaining optimal water parameters is crucial for its health. Ideal temperature ranges from 24°C to 28°C, with salinity levels between 35-40 ppt. The pH should be kept between 8.1 and 8.4 to ensure a stable environment. Regular water changes and monitoring of water quality will help maintain these parameters.

Feeding should include high-quality coral food and phytoplankton, especially in lower light conditions, to support its nutritional needs. While Green Horn Coral is relatively hardy, it is essential to ensure compatibility with other tank inhabitants, as aggressive corals can harm it. Acclimation should be gradual, allowing the coral to adjust to new water parameters over several hours.

Quarantine is recommended to prevent the introduction of pests or diseases into the main tank. Observing the coral for any signs of stress or disease during this period is essential to ensure a successful transition to its new environment.
Green Horn Coral is suitable for shipping due to its resilience but should be packed with care to minimize stress. A shipping density of 1-2 pieces per container is recommended to allow for adequate water circulation. Maintaining a temperature between 22°C and 26°C during transport is critical to ensure the coral's health. Currently, there are no CITES restrictions on this species.
