Black Angel

The Black Angel, scientifically known as Pterophyllum scalare, is a captivating freshwater species native to the Amazon Basin. The black coloration can vary from a solid deep black to a more mottled appearance, often with shimmering highlights that catch the light beautifully. In their natural habitat, Black Angels prefer slow-moving waters such as rivers and streams, often found among dense vegetation and submerged structures. This environment provides them with ample hiding spots and breeding grounds. Their behavior is generally peaceful, although they can be territorial during breeding seasons. Black Angels are social creatures and thrive in groups, displaying a range of interactions that can be fascinating to observe.

As a species, Black Angels are quite resilient, adapting well to various aquarium conditions. Regular monitoring of water quality is essential, as they are sensitive to fluctuations. A minimum tank size of 100 liters is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial disputes.

Black Angels are omnivorous, thriving on a varied diet that includes high-quality flakes, pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms. Feeding them twice a day in small amounts will help maintain their health and vibrant coloration. Compatibility-wise, they generally coexist well with other peaceful fish, but caution should be exercised with aggressive species.

Acclimation is crucial when introducing new Black Angels to an aquarium. A slow drip acclimation method is recommended to minimize stress. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks in a separate tank to prevent the spread of diseases. Observing their behavior and health during this period ensures a successful transition into the main tank.

Black Angels are suitable for shipping, provided proper care is taken during transit. Packing density should be moderate to ensure enough oxygen during transport. Maintain a stable temperature between 24°C and 28°C, as they are sensitive to extreme temperature fluctuations. These fish are not listed under CITES, simplifying regulatory compliance for exporters.
