The Platinum Angel (Pterophyllum scalare) is a stunning freshwater fish known for its exceptional beauty and calm demeanor. A variant of the common angelfish, this species exhibits a remarkable platinum hue, which is enhanced by its graceful fins and distinctive shape. Originating from the Amazon Basin, the Platinum Angel is not only a visual delight but also a symbol of tranquility in the aquatic environment.

In the wild, these fish inhabit slow-moving rivers and streams, often found in densely vegetated areas. Their natural habitat provides plenty of hiding spots and breeding grounds; thus, they thrive in environments rich in flora. The Platinum Angel is characterized by its laterally compressed body, long fins, and the ability to display a variety of colors, with the platinum variant standing out due to its reflective quality.

Platinum Angels are generally peaceful and can coexist with a variety of other fish species, making them ideal for community tanks. They exhibit social behavior, often seen swimming in pairs or small groups. Their calm temperament and graceful movements add a serene presence to any aquarium. However, it is essential to provide them with adequate space and suitable tank mates to prevent any territorial disputes.

Due to their striking appearance and gentle nature, Platinum Angels have become a favorite among aquarists. Their adaptability to different water conditions and ease of care make them accessible for both novice and experienced fish keepers alike. As they mature, they can reach sizes of up to 15 cm, requiring a spacious aquarium to accommodate their growth and swimming habits.
To ensure the health and longevity of Platinum Angels, maintain water parameters within the ideal ranges: temperature between 24-28°C, pH between 6.5-7.5, and hardness of 3-10 dGH. Regular water changes and efficient filtration are crucial to keep the water quality high. Feeding a varied diet consisting of high-quality flakes, pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods will help keep them healthy and vibrant.

Compatibility is important; these fish do well with other peaceful species such as tetras, corydoras, and other angelfish. Avoid aggressive or overly territorial species that may stress the Platinum Angel. During acclimation, slowly introduce them to the new tank conditions over several hours to minimize stress. Quarantine new arrivals for a minimum of two weeks to prevent the spread of disease.

Due to their size, a minimum tank size of 100 liters is recommended to provide ample space for swimming and hiding. Regular observation is essential to ensure they are feeding well and interacting positively with tank mates. With proper care, Platinum Angels can live for several years, becoming a cherished part of any aquarium.
Platinum Angels are suitable for shipping and can be packed in breathable bags to ensure adequate oxygen supply. A packing density of 1-2 fish per liter is recommended to minimize stress during transport. They are sensitive to temperature fluctuations, so maintaining a consistent temperature between 24-28°C during shipping is crucial. This species is not listed under CITES, making export straightforward.
