The current institutional catalogue records Java Barb from Sumatra, Java, southern Borneo and the Mekong basin. FishBase describes a fish of rivers, streams, floodplains and reservoirs that also enters flooded forest. It feeds on plant material and invertebrates.
This species grows well beyond the listed sale grade; FishBase includes a reported 45 cm specimen measured in total length, including the tail. Plan long-term accommodation accordingly. The supplier does not specify where the present wild batch was collected.
