The Walking Catfish (Clarias batrachus), also known as the White Golden Catfish, is a remarkable freshwater species native to Southeast Asia. This fish is particularly known for its unique ability to move across land, using its pectoral fins to keep upright while performing a snakelike motion. This adaptation allows it to migrate between aquatic environments, especially during dry periods when its natural habitat may become stagnant or desiccated. Typically found in slow-moving waters such as ponds, swamps, and rice paddies, the Walking Catfish thrives in habitats that may face seasonal changes in water availability.

In terms of appearance, the Walking Catfish features a long, elongated body with a broad head and prominent barbels, which are sensitive to touch and taste. Its coloration can range from light cream to a golden hue, often with specks or patches that provide camouflage in its natural environment. Adult specimens can reach sizes of up to 30 cm, making them a visually striking addition to freshwater aquariums.

Behaviorally, the Walking Catfish is known for its scavenging habits, feeding on a variety of organic matter, including detritus and small invertebrates. They are generally nocturnal, becoming more active during the night. While they can exhibit territorial behaviors, especially when breeding, they are relatively peaceful towards other species, making them suitable for community tanks with appropriate tankmates.

The habitat of the Walking Catfish is often characterized by shallow waters rich in vegetation. They prefer environments with ample hiding spots, such as submerged logs and dense aquatic plants, which provide security and breeding grounds for this adaptable species.
To successfully care for Walking Catfish, importers and retailers should maintain water parameters that mimic their natural habitat. Ideal conditions include a temperature range of 24-28°C, a pH level between 6.5 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Regular water changes are essential to keep nitrates and other waste products low.

Feeding should consist of a varied diet, including high-quality pellets, frozen foods like bloodworms, and live food to ensure proper nutrition. Due to their scavenging nature, these fish will consume a variety of food types, making them easy to feed. Compatibility-wise, Walking Catfish can coexist with many freshwater species, but care should be taken with smaller fish that may be seen as prey.

Acclimation to a new environment should be gradual; it is recommended to use the drip acclimation method to minimize stress. Quarantine periods of at least two weeks are advisable for new arrivals to prevent the introduction of diseases into existing stock. Monitoring their behavior during this time is crucial to ensure they adapt well before being introduced to community tanks.
Walking Catfish are moderately resilient during shipping, provided they are packed with care. Recommended packing density is 1-2 fish per liter of water to ensure adequate oxygen levels. They can tolerate short shipping durations but should be kept at temperatures between 22-25°C to reduce stress. As a species listed under CITES Appendix II, proper documentation is required for international trade.
