The Purple Arm Crab, scientifically known as Metasesarma obesum, is a captivating species of sesarmid crab that thrives in semiterrestrial and brackish-water habitats. Known for its striking coloration and intricate patterns, this species is often referred to as the marble crab or marble Batik crab due to its beautiful, marbled appearance. These crabs are commonly found along sandy beaches, where they play an essential role in the coastal ecosystem.

In terms of physical characteristics, Metasesarma obesum displays a distinctive blend of purple and blue hues on its limbs, with a patterned carapace that can range from light to dark shades. Adult crabs can reach sizes of up to 5 cm across their carapace. Their unique coloration not only serves as a form of camouflage but also plays a role in attracting mates during the breeding season. These crabs are primarily active during the day, foraging for food along the shoreline and among rocky crevices.

Metasesarma obesum exhibits fascinating behavior, often seen climbing rocks and foraging for detritus and algae. Their diet consists mainly of organic material, making them efficient scavengers in their natural habitat. As a semi-terrestrial species, they are adept at navigating their environment, utilizing both land and water to meet their needs. This adaptability allows them to thrive in various brackish conditions, making them a resilient species.

The natural habitat of the Purple Arm Crab includes coastal regions where freshwater and saltwater mix, such as estuaries and mangrove swamps. These environments provide the necessary resources for their survival, including food and shelter from predators. As part of the coastal ecosystem, they contribute to nutrient cycling and serve as prey for larger marine animals, underscoring their importance in maintaining ecological balance.
When caring for the Purple Arm Crab, it's crucial to maintain specific water parameters to ensure their health and well-being. They thrive in brackish water conditions with a salinity range of 10-20 ppt. The ideal temperature for Metasesarma obesum is between 24°C to 28°C, and a pH level of 7.5 to 8.5 is recommended. A minimum tank size of 50 liters is advisable to provide ample space for foraging and exploration.

Feeding these crabs is relatively straightforward, as they are omnivores that enjoy a diet consisting of high-quality pellets, algae, and occasional protein sources such as shrimp or fish. It is essential to provide a varied diet to promote optimal growth and coloration. Compatibility-wise, they can be housed with other peaceful species, but caution should be exercised with aggressive tank mates that may pose a threat.

Acclimation is critical when introducing Purple Arm Crabs to a new environment. Gradually acclimatizing them to the tank's water parameters over a few hours can reduce stress. Additionally, a quarantine period of at least two weeks is recommended to monitor for any signs of disease and ensure the health of your new crabs before introducing them to a communal tank.
The Purple Arm Crab is suitable for shipping due to its hard exoskeleton, which provides some protection during transit. Packing density should be limited to 2-3 crabs per liter to ensure adequate space and minimize stress. A stable temperature between 24°C and 28°C is ideal during shipping, as these crabs are sensitive to temperature fluctuations. Metasesarma obesum is not listed under CITES, simplifying export regulations for wholesalers and importers.
