Cambarellus puer, commonly referred to as the swamp dwarf crayfish, is a small freshwater crustacean belonging to the family Cambaridae. This species is originally native to the United States, primarily found in southern states such as Oklahoma, Texas, and Louisiana. These crayfish are known for their charming appearance, featuring a range of colors from green to blue, often with striking patterns that make them popular among aquarists. Their small size, typically reaching no more than 5 cm (2 inches), makes them particularly suited for nano aquariums and smaller aquatic setups.

In terms of behavior, Cambarellus puer is a peaceful species that can be kept in community tanks, provided that tank mates are not overly aggressive. They are relatively active, often seen foraging and exploring their environment, which includes hiding spaces such as caves or plants. Their natural habitat consists of slow-moving waters, marshes, and swamps, where they thrive in soft, vegetated areas that provide ample cover and food sources.

These crayfish are detritivores, feeding on decomposing plant material, algae, and small invertebrates. Their diet is essential for maintaining the ecological balance in their habitat, as they contribute to the breakdown of organic matter. Cambarellus puer also exhibits fascinating breeding behavior; females carry fertilized eggs beneath their tails until they hatch into miniature versions of adults, ensuring high survival rates in their natural environment.

A minimum tank size of 30 liters is recommended to provide adequate space for foraging and hiding. To create a suitable habitat, incorporate plenty of hiding spots, such as rocks, driftwood, and aquatic plants, which help reduce stress and promote natural behaviors.

Feeding should consist of high-quality sinking pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables to provide a balanced diet. It is important to ensure they receive a varied diet to support their health and coloration. Cambarellus puer is generally compatible with other peaceful tank mates, but caution should be taken with larger or more aggressive species that may pose a threat.

Acclimation is essential when introducing these crayfish to a new environment. Gradually acclimate them to the new tank water over several hours to minimize stress. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to monitor for any signs of disease before introducing them to the main tank. This practice helps prevent the spread of pathogens and ensures a healthy aquarium ecosystem.

Cambarellus puer is suitable for export due to its hardiness during transit. When shipping, ensure proper packing with sufficient oxygen and temperature control, ideally between 18°C and 24°C. A packing density of 1-2 individuals per liter is recommended to reduce stress. This species is not listed under CITES, making it easier for international trade.
