The Black Hinomaru Shrimp (Caridina cantonensis sp) is a stunning freshwater invertebrate known for its striking black and white coloration that resembles a traditional Japanese Hinomaru flag. This shrimp is a variant of the well-known crystal shrimp and has gained popularity among aquarists due to its unique appearance and intriguing behavior. With a body that showcases a glossy black shell speckled with white spots, it creates a visually appealing contrast in any aquarium setting.

Native to the freshwater streams of Southeast Asia, these shrimp thrive in slow-moving waters rich in aquatic vegetation. Black Hinomaru Shrimp prefer to inhabit areas with plenty of hiding spots, such as mosses, rocks, and driftwood, which provide both security and breeding grounds. They are typically found in densely planted tanks, where they can forage for food and seek refuge from potential predators.

In terms of behavior, these shrimp are generally peaceful and social, often seen grazing on biofilm, algae, and detritus in their environment. They exhibit fascinating interactions with one another, displaying a hierarchy within their groups. Their active nature makes them entertaining to observe, as they scuttle around the tank, constantly foraging and exploring their surroundings.

The Black Hinomaru Shrimp is also a valuable addition to shrimp breeding programs, as they can produce vibrant offspring that retain their striking coloration. This has contributed to their growing popularity among both hobbyists and commercial breeders, making them a sought-after species in the aquatic trade.
To ensure the health and longevity of Black Hinomaru Shrimp, maintaining optimal water conditions is crucial. A temperature range of 22-26°C is ideal, with a pH level between 6.0 and 7.5. Soft, slightly acidic water is preferred, mimicking their natural habitat. Regular water changes and filtration are essential to maintain water quality, as these shrimp are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite levels.

Feeding should include high-quality shrimp pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables, ensuring a balanced diet rich in nutrients. It is recommended to feed them small amounts multiple times a day to prevent overfeeding and maintain water quality. As for compatibility, Black Hinomaru Shrimp are peaceful and can be kept with other small, non-aggressive fish and invertebrates, but avoid larger species that may see them as prey.

Acclimation is critical; introduce them to the aquarium slowly to reduce stress. Drip acclimation is the preferred method, gradually adjusting their new environment over several hours. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to ensure they are free from disease before adding them to a community tank.
Black Hinomaru Shrimp are suitable for shipping and can be packed securely in breathable bags with adequate oxygen and water. A packing density of 10-15 shrimp per liter is recommended to minimize stress during transport. They are sensitive to temperature fluctuations, so maintaining a stable temperature between 22-24°C during shipping is crucial. This species is not listed under CITES, making export and trade more straightforward.
