Malaya Shrimp (Caridina cf. babaulti 'Malaya') is a captivating species known for its striking color variations and adaptability in freshwater environments. Native to Southeast Asia, these shrimp are often found in slow-moving waters, such as streams, rivers, and swamps, where they thrive in dense vegetation, providing them with ample hiding spots and feeding opportunities. Their natural habitat is characterized by soft substrate and abundant biofilm, which forms the basis of their diet in the wild.

In terms of appearance, Malaya Shrimp exhibit a range of colors, from deep blues and greens to vibrant reds and yellows, depending on their specific lineage and environmental conditions. Their translucent bodies allow them to blend seamlessly with their surroundings, providing excellent camouflage against predators. Adult shrimp typically reach a maximum size of around 4-5 cm, making them a suitable choice for various aquarium setups.

Behaviorally, Malaya Shrimp are generally peaceful and social creatures that thrive in groups. They exhibit interesting foraging behaviors, often scavenging for detritus and algae on the substrate. This makes them not only a beautiful addition to aquariums but also beneficial for maintaining water quality through their natural cleaning habits. They can coexist with small fish and other invertebrates, provided that tank mates are not aggressive or large enough to consider them prey.

Malaya Shrimp prefer stable water conditions that mimic their natural habitat. They are sensitive to drastic changes in water quality, making it essential for aquarists to maintain a well-cycled tank with appropriate parameters. Regular water changes and monitoring of water quality are crucial for the health and longevity of this species.
To successfully keep Malaya Shrimp, maintaining optimal water parameters is crucial. Ideal water temperature ranges from 22 to 28 degrees Celsius, with a pH level between 6.5 and 7.5. They thrive in soft to moderately hard water, and it's advisable to perform regular water changes to ensure the tank remains clean and stable.

Feeding Malaya Shrimp is straightforward, as they are omnivorous and will consume a variety of foods. A balanced diet should include high-quality shrimp pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables. Additionally, supplementing their diet with biofilm and detritus will enhance their health and color. It's essential to feed them small amounts several times a week to avoid overfeeding and water quality issues.

Compatibility is generally favorable, as Malaya Shrimp can coexist with non-aggressive fish and other shrimps. However, larger or aggressive species may pose a threat, so selecting tank mates carefully is vital. Before introducing new shrimp to an established aquarium, acclimation is necessary to minimize stress. This can be done through the drip acclimation method over several hours.

Quarantine is recommended for new arrivals to prevent the introduction of diseases into the main tank. A separate tank with similar water parameters should be used for at least two weeks to monitor their health and ensure they are free from parasites or illness before adding them to your main display.
Malaya Shrimp are suitable for shipping, but care must be taken to ensure their well-being during transit. Packing should allow for adequate oxygen and minimal stress, with a density of no more than 10-15 shrimp per liter of water. Temperature during shipping should be maintained between 20-25 degrees Celsius to prevent thermal shock. Currently, there are no CITES restrictions on this species.
