The Red Crystal Shrimp (Caridina cantonensis sp) is a popular freshwater invertebrate known for its brilliant red and white coloration. This species is a part of the Caridina genus, which is renowned for its aesthetic appeal and is often sought after by aquarists. The shrimp display a beautiful, translucent body with striking red stripes, making them a favorite choice for aquascapers looking to add vibrant color to their tanks.

In their natural habitat, Red Crystal Shrimp are typically found in soft, acidic waters, often in densely vegetated areas. These shrimp thrive in environments rich in biofilm and algae, which provide a natural food source. As scavengers, they play a critical role in their ecosystem by consuming detritus and organic matter, contributing to the overall health of the aquatic environment.

Behaviorally, Red Crystal Shrimp are relatively peaceful and can be kept in groups, where they exhibit fascinating social interactions. They are known for their active foraging behavior, often seen grazing on surfaces in search of food. Their peaceful nature makes them suitable for community tanks, provided that tank mates are chosen carefully to avoid aggression.

To maintain a healthy population, it is essential to replicate their natural habitat as closely as possible in captivity. This includes providing plenty of hiding spaces and a soft substrate, which allows them to feel secure and encourages natural behavior.

For successful care of Red Crystal Shrimp, maintaining the right water parameters is crucial. They thrive in a temperature range of 22-26°C, with a pH level between 6.0 and 7.5. Regular water changes are recommended to keep the water clean and free from harmful substances. A minimum tank size of 20 liters is advisable to provide ample space for movement and grazing.

Feeding Red Crystal Shrimp is relatively straightforward. They are omnivorous and should be offered a varied diet that includes high-quality shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables, and algae wafers. It is essential not to overfeed, as uneaten food can pollute the water. When introducing new shrimp to a tank, acclimation is necessary to reduce stress; a slow drip method over several hours is recommended.

In terms of compatibility, Red Crystal Shrimp can coexist with small, peaceful fish and other invertebrates. However, they should not be housed with aggressive or larger species that may see them as prey. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to prevent the introduction of diseases into the main tank.

Red Crystal Shrimp are suitable for shipping due to their hardiness, but care must be taken during transit. It is recommended to pack them in breathable bags with ample water and provide sufficient temperature control to avoid stress. A packing density of 10-15 shrimp per liter is ideal. They are sensitive to extreme temperature fluctuations, so maintaining a stable environment during shipping is critical. CITES status is not applicable to this species.
