The Primitive Rabbit Snail (Celetaia persclupa) is a captivating freshwater invertebrate native to the lush waterways of Southeast Asia, particularly in Indonesia. Known for its distinctive elongated shell and rabbit-like features, this species stands out in any aquatic setting. Its shell can reach up to 10 cm in length and exhibits a beautiful pattern of shades that blend harmoniously with aquatic plants and substrates.

In terms of behavior, Primitive Rabbit Snails are peaceful and sociable creatures, making them ideal for community tanks. They are primarily detritivores, feeding on decaying organic matter, algae, and biofilm, which helps maintain a balanced ecosystem in their habitat. These snails are also known for their unique reproductive strategy, where they lay eggs in small clusters, contributing to their population sustainably.

The natural habitat of Celetaia persclupa consists of slow-moving rivers, streams, and swampy areas rich in vegetation. They thrive in environments where they can access ample food sources while remaining safe from predators. The presence of leaf litter and aquatic plants in their habitat provides both nourishment and shelter, allowing them to exhibit their natural behavior and feeding patterns.

With their captivating appearance and beneficial role in aquarium environments, the Primitive Rabbit Snail is becoming increasingly popular among aquarists. Their gentle nature and low maintenance requirements make them suitable for both novice and experienced aquarium owners alike.
When caring for Primitive Rabbit Snails, it is essential to maintain stable water parameters. Ideal conditions include a temperature range of 22-28°C and a pH level between 6.5 and 8.0. The water should be soft to moderately hard, with a general hardness (GH) of 5-15 dGH. It is crucial to provide a well-planted tank with hiding spots and varied substrate to mimic their natural habitat.

Feeding these snails is relatively straightforward; they thrive on a diet of algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and specially formulated snail food. They can also benefit from occasional protein-rich foods to enhance their growth and health. Compatibility is generally high, as they coexist peacefully with most community fish, provided that the fish are not aggressive.

Acclimation should be done gradually to minimize stress. Introduce snails to the aquarium by floating the bag in the tank for about 15-20 minutes to equalize the temperature, followed by slowly mixing tank water into the bag before releasing them. Quarantine is recommended for new arrivals to prevent any potential diseases from affecting the main tank population.
Primitive Rabbit Snails are suitable for shipping, provided they are packed carefully in moisture-retentive materials. A packing density of 2-3 snails per liter is advisable to ensure they have enough space during transit. They are sensitive to temperature fluctuations, so maintaining a stable environment at around 24-26°C during shipping is crucial. Currently, Celetaia persclupa is not listed under CITES, simplifying export regulations.
