The Metallic Goby (Stiphodon sp) is a captivating freshwater fish that stands out for its iridescent coloration and unique behavior. Native to the streams and rivers of Bali, this species exhibits a variety of brilliant hues, from electric blues to shimmering greens, making them a sought-after addition to aquariums. Their small, streamlined bodies are perfectly adapted for life in fast-flowing waters, where they can often be seen darting among rocks and vegetation.

In terms of behavior, Metallic Gobies are known for their lively and social nature. They thrive in groups, often displaying interesting interactions and territorial displays, especially during breeding seasons. Males are particularly vibrant during these times, showcasing their colors to attract females. This species is also known for its unique feeding habits, primarily grazing on algae and biofilm found in their natural habitat, contributing to the ecological balance of their environment.

Metallic Gobies prefer clear, clean freshwater habitats with moderate to strong currents. They are typically found in shallow waters, where they can hide among rocks and substrate. The presence of vegetation is crucial, as it provides cover and breeding sites. These fish are generally found in the tropical regions of Bali, where the temperature and water quality are optimal for their survival and growth.

As an aquarium species, they require similar conditions to thrive. Their vibrant appearance and dynamic behavior make them a favorite among aquarists, but they do require specific care to ensure their health and longevity in captivity.

To successfully care for Metallic Gobies, maintain water parameters that closely mimic their natural environment. Ideal temperatures range from 22°C to 28°C, with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5. This species prefers slightly acidic to neutral water. A minimum tank size of 60 liters is recommended to provide ample swimming space and to accommodate a small group, as they are social fish.

Feeding should primarily consist of high-quality algae wafers, spirulina, and other plant-based foods, supplemented with occasional protein sources like brine shrimp or daphnia. Compatibility with other species is generally good, but they should be housed with small, peaceful fish to avoid stress. Avoid aggressive tankmates that may bully them.

Acclimation is crucial; use a slow drip method to introduce them into a new tank. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to monitor for any signs of disease before introducing them to the main aquarium. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential to keep the tank environment healthy, promoting the well-being of these stunning fish.

Metallic Gobies are suitable for shipping, provided proper care is taken in packing. Use insulated boxes and ensure they are packed with adequate oxygen and water to minimize stress. The ideal shipping temperature should be maintained between 22°C and 26°C. These fish are sensitive to extreme temperatures and should not be exposed to temperatures below 20°C or above 30°C during transit. Currently, there are no CITES restrictions on this species, facilitating their export.
