Oxyeleotris nullipora, commonly known as the Poreless Gudgeon, is a fascinating member of the gudgeon family that is primarily found in the freshwater environments of Australia and Papua New Guinea. This species is remarkable for its lack of pores, which sets it apart from other gudgeons. The Poreless Gudgeon typically inhabits rivers, streams, and swamps, where it thrives in a variety of aquatic conditions, showcasing its adaptability to different freshwater habitats.

In terms of appearance, the Poreless Gudgeon possesses a streamlined body that can reach lengths of up to 15 cm. Its coloration is generally a blend of earthy tones, enabling it to blend seamlessly with its natural surroundings. This camouflage is essential for evading predators and enhancing its hunting prowess. The fish has a relatively small mouth filled with sharp teeth, ideal for feeding on crustaceans and other small aquatic organisms.

Behaviorally, the Poreless Gudgeon is known for its active nature and territorial tendencies, especially during breeding seasons. Males will establish territories and display vibrant colors to attract females. These fish are typically bottom dwellers, often seen foraging through the substrate for food, making them an interesting addition to community tanks that mimic their natural environments.

Their habitat preferences include slow-moving waters with ample vegetation, providing both shelter and feeding opportunities. Proper habitat setup in captivity mimicking these conditions is crucial for their well-being and successful breeding efforts.
When caring for Poreless Gudegons, maintaining optimal water parameters is essential. The ideal temperature range for this species is between 22°C and 28°C, with a pH level between 6.5 and 7.5. These fish prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, so regular monitoring and adjustments may be necessary. A minimum tank size of 100 liters is recommended to provide ample space for swimming and territorial behavior.

Feeding Poreless Gudegons is straightforward, as they are carnivorous in nature. A varied diet consisting of high-quality pellets, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, and bloodworms will ensure they receive the necessary nutrients. It is advisable to feed them small amounts several times a day rather than one large feeding session to prevent overfeeding.

In terms of compatibility, Poreless Gudegons can coexist with other peaceful freshwater species, but caution should be exercised with more aggressive tankmates. Acclimation should be done gradually by floating the sealed bag in the tank for about 15-20 minutes before releasing them into their new environment. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to prevent the introduction of diseases into your main tank.
The Poreless Gudgeon is suitable for shipping due to its hardiness. Packing density should be moderate, ensuring adequate oxygenation and space during transit. Ideally, maintain a shipping temperature between 22°C and 25°C to minimize stress. This species is not listed under CITES, allowing for straightforward export regulations.
