The Rainbow Goby (Stiphodon ornatus) is a captivating freshwater fish native to the streams and rivers of Southeast Asia, particularly in Indonesia. Adult Rainbow Gobies typically reach a maximum size of around 5 cm, showcasing their small yet vibrant presence in aquariums.

In their natural habitat, Rainbow Gobies inhabit fast-flowing waters with plenty of rocks and vegetation. They thrive in well-oxygenated environments, where they can be observed darting between crevices and utilizing their specialized dorsal fins to anchor themselves against strong currents. Their behavior is highly engaging, often seen in small groups, exhibiting social interactions and territorial displays.

Rainbow Gobies are primarily algae grazers, feeding on biofilm and detritus found on rocks. This feeding behavior is crucial for maintaining the ecological balance in their native environments, as they help control algae growth. To successfully care for Rainbow Gobies, maintain water parameters that closely mimic their natural habitat. The ideal temperature range is between 24°C to 28°C, with a pH level of 6.5 to 7.5. Ensure the aquarium is well-aerated and has a moderate flow to replicate their fast-flowing river environment. A minimum tank size of 60 liters is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and territory.

Feeding Rainbow Gobies involves a diet rich in algae, which can be supplemented with high-quality flake foods and frozen or live foods. They are not aggressive and can coexist peacefully with other small, non-aggressive fish. However, care should be taken to avoid larger species that may outcompete them for food or pose a threat.

Acclimation is crucial during the introduction of Rainbow Gobies to a new tank. A slow acclimation process over several hours will help reduce stress and ensure a smooth transition. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to monitor for any signs of disease before adding them to the main aquarium.

Rainbow Gobies are suitable for shipping under controlled conditions. They should be packed in breathable bags with ample oxygen and minimal water to maintain stable temperatures during transit. Ideal shipping temperatures range from 22°C to 26°C. CITES status is not applicable for this species, as it is not listed under any protection framework, making it a viable option for export.
