The Leopard Gourami, scientifically known as Ctenopoma acutirostre, is a fascinating freshwater species that belongs to the Anabantidae family, commonly referred to as labyrinth fish. This species is renowned for its distinctive spotted pattern, which not only provides a visual appeal but also aids in camouflage within its natural habitat. The Leopard Gourami exhibits a flattened body structure, typically growing up to 15 cm in length, with a variety of colors ranging from greenish-brown to yellowish tones, adorned with dark spots that give it its leopard-like appearance.

In terms of behavior, Leopard Gouramis are relatively peaceful and can display a calm demeanor when kept in suitable environments. They are adapted to slow-moving waters and are often found in swamps, marshes, and floodplains in their native Southeast Asian habitats. This species is also known for its ability to breathe atmospheric air, thanks to their labyrinth organ, which allows them to thrive in oxygen-poor waters.

Their diet primarily consists of insects and small crustaceans in the wild, making them opportunistic feeders that will accept a variety of foods in captivity.

The Leopard Gourami's natural habitat consists of densely vegetated areas, where they can find shelter and breeding grounds. As such, they thrive in environments that replicate these conditions, with plenty of hiding spots provided by plants and decorations, making them an excellent addition to a well-planted aquarium.

When caring for Leopard Gouramis, it's crucial to maintain stable water parameters. The ideal temperature range is between 24°C to 28°C, with pH levels ideally between 6.0 to 7.5. These fish thrive in soft to moderately hard water, and a minimum tank size of 100 liters is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory.

Feeding Leopard Gouramis is relatively straightforward, as they are omnivorous. A balanced diet should include high-quality flake food, pellets, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms to promote optimal health and coloration. It’s essential to ensure a varied diet to meet their nutritional needs.

In terms of compatibility, Leopard Gouramis can be housed with many community fish, but caution is advised with aggressive species. During the acclimation process, gradual introduction to the aquarium is recommended to reduce stress. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to prevent the spread of diseases. Regular tank maintenance, including water changes and monitoring for any signs of illness, will help maintain a healthy environment for these captivating fish.

Leopard Gouramis are relatively robust and can be shipped with care. Ideal shipping temperatures should be maintained between 24°C to 28°C. Packing should allow for sufficient water volume while minimizing stress. As a non-CITES species, they do not face restrictions in trade, simplifying the export process.
