The Polka-Dot Loach (Botia kubotai), also known as the Burmese Border Loach, is a striking freshwater fish that has quickly gained popularity among aquarium enthusiasts. Discovered by fish collectors in the western regions of Thailand and Myanmar, its vibrant polka-dot pattern and playful nature make it a standout addition to any freshwater tank. This species is named after Katsuma Kubota, an aquarium exporter who played a pivotal role in its introduction to the trade.

In terms of appearance, the Polka-Dot Loach features a sleek, elongated body adorned with distinctive round spots that provide an eye-catching contrast against its golden-brown or light tan background. These markings not only enhance its visual appeal but also serve as a form of camouflage in its natural habitat, which consists of slow-moving rivers and streams filled with leaf litter and submerged vegetation. The loach's small, delicate fins and whisker-like barbels further contribute to its unique charm.

Behaviorally, the Polka-Dot Loach is known for its inquisitive and active nature. These fish are social and thrive in groups, often seen foraging along the substrate for food. They exhibit a range of behaviors, from playful swimming to burrowing in the substrate, which mimics their natural instincts. Their peaceful temperament makes them compatible with a variety of tank mates, though they may occasionally display territorial behavior during breeding.

In the wild, Polka-Dot Loaches inhabit freshwater environments characterized by soft, slightly acidic water and ample hiding spots. Their preference for well-structured aquascapes means incorporating plants, driftwood, and rocks in an aquarium setting to mimic their natural habitat. This not only benefits their well-being but also enhances the overall aesthetic of the aquarium.
To ensure the optimal health of Polka-Dot Loaches, maintaining specific water parameters is crucial. The ideal temperature range is between 24°C to 28°C, with a pH level of 6.0 to 7.5. These loaches prefer soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, making regular monitoring essential. A minimum tank size of 100 liters is recommended to provide ample space for swimming and hiding.

Feeding Polka-Dot Loaches is straightforward as they are omnivorous. A balanced diet consisting of high-quality sinking pellets, frozen foods like bloodworms, and occasional vegetable matter will keep them healthy. It’s important to feed them in small portions to avoid overfeeding, which can lead to water quality issues.

Compatibility-wise, Polka-Dot Loaches are generally peaceful and can coexist with a range of species, including other loaches, tetras, and rasboras. However, their social nature means they should be kept in groups of at least five to thrive. When introducing them to a new aquarium, acclimation should be done gradually to reduce stress, and a quarantine period of at least two weeks is recommended to prevent the introduction of any diseases into the main tank.
Polka-Dot Loaches are suitable for shipping due to their hardiness. Recommended packing density is 1-2 fish per liter to allow for adequate oxygenation. They are sensitive to extreme temperatures, so shipping should be conducted within a temperature range of 22°C to 25°C. These fish are not listed under CITES, simplifying export regulations.
