Adults can reach a maximum size of approximately 15 cm, making them suitable for a variety of aquarium settings.

In their natural habitat, Banded Leporinus inhabit slow-moving waters, such as rivers and floodplains, where they often forage among submerged vegetation. These fish are known for their active and social behavior, often seen swimming in small schools. Their playful nature and curious temperament make them a favorite among aquarists who appreciate lively tank dynamics.

Behaviorally, Banded Leporinus are generally peaceful but can show occasional territoriality, particularly during breeding. They thrive in environments that mimic their natural habitat, requiring plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas. Their diet consists mainly of plant matter, but they will also consume small invertebrates and crustaceans, making them omnivorous in nature.

This species is also relatively hardy, making it a good choice for both novice and experienced aquarists. However, they benefit from a well-maintained tank with stable water conditions to ensure optimal health and longevity.

For optimal care of Leporinus fasciatus, maintain water temperatures between 24°C and 28°C, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5. A minimum tank size of 100 liters is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory. The Banded Leporinus thrives in a well-filtered environment with moderate water flow and plenty of plants and hiding spots to mimic their natural habitat.

Feeding should consist of a varied diet that includes high-quality flake foods, pellets, and occasional fresh vegetables like zucchini or spinach. They appreciate the addition of protein-rich foods such as brine shrimp or bloodworms. Compatibility-wise, they can coexist with many species but should be housed with similarly-sized fish to prevent bullying.

When acclimating Banded Leporinus, it’s crucial to introduce them slowly to prevent stress. A quarantine period of at least two weeks is advisable for all new arrivals to monitor for any signs of disease and to ensure they adjust well to the aquarium environment.

Leporinus fasciatus is suitable for shipping and can be packed in groups of 5-10 per bag, depending on size. It is important to maintain stable water temperatures during transport, ideally between 24°C and 26°C. Ensure that the bags are well-oxygenated. This species is not listed under CITES, minimizing export restrictions.
