The species feeds mainly on terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates and may also take small fish. It uses sheltered surface areas in fresh and brackish habitats, especially estuarine or mangrove settings. The wild 4-5 cm shipping grade does not specify sex, catch locality or current holding salinity.
Specialist brackish-aquarium guidance gives 25-30 C and pH 7.0-8.0. Confirm the actual holding salinity and transfer plan before receiving; do not add salt by an arbitrary recipe. Provide sheltered surface space and slow movement, offer suitable floating and live or frozen foods, and avoid swallowable companions. Conspecific rivalry is reduced in appropriately housed groups of four or five.
