Red Snakeheads

Channa micropeltes, commonly known as the Red Snakehead or Toman Harimau, is a captivating species native to the fresh waters of Southeast Asia. This fish is renowned for its remarkable size, capable of reaching lengths of up to 1.8 meters (5.9 feet) and weighing as much as 30 kg (66 lb). Its elongated body is adorned with distinctive color patterns, typically featuring a mix of dark brown and vibrant red hues that make it a striking addition to any aquatic display.

In terms of behavior, Red Snakeheads are known for their territorial and aggressive nature, particularly during breeding seasons. They are capable of breathing air, which allows them to thrive in low-oxygen environments, making them adaptable to various freshwater habitats, including rivers, swamps, and marshes. To maintain healthy Red Snakeheads, it is essential to provide a spacious aquarium of at least 500 liters to accommodate their size and activity level. Water parameters should be kept stable, with a temperature range of 24-30°C, pH levels between 6.0 and 7.5, and 0 ppt salinity, as they thrive in freshwater. Regular water changes are crucial to ensure optimal water quality, given their sensitivity to pollution.

Feeding these carnivorous fish requires a diet rich in protein. High-quality pellets, live or frozen foods such as fish, shrimp, and worms are ideal. It is important to feed them appropriately sized portions to prevent overfeeding, which can lead to health issues. Compatibility can be challenging; therefore, it is advisable to house them with larger, similarly aggressive species to avoid conflict.

Acclimation is critical when introducing Red Snakeheads to a new environment. They should be gradually acclimated to avoid stress, ideally over a few hours, using the drip acclimation method. Quarantine procedures should also be implemented for new arrivals to prevent the introduction of diseases into the main aquarium setup.

Red Snakeheads are suitable for air freight, provided they are packed securely in breathable bags with adequate water. Packing density should not exceed one fish per 20 liters to minimize stress during transit. They are sensitive to temperature fluctuations, requiring a stable range of 24-30°C during shipping. Currently, they are not listed under CITES regulations, simplifying their export processes.
