In Gymnochanda ploegi, the enlarged second dorsal and anal fins remain connected by membrane rather than ending in separate free filaments. Females lack the male fin extensions. The species was described from West Kalimantan still-water pools; the wild 3.0 cm and 3.2-3.4 cm grades do not specify sex or certify a collecting site.
