Hypostomus plecostomus, commonly referred to as the Albino Plecostomus or Suckermouth Catfish, is a fascinating tropical freshwater species native to the rivers and streams of South America. Unlike its more common counterparts, the albino variant is characterized by its pale body and bright red or orange eyes, making it a visually appealing addition to any aquarium. These fish are known for their armored bodies, covered in rows of scutes that provide protection from predators in their natural habitat.

In the wild, Albino Plecostomus can grow up to 50 cm in standard length and can live for 7 to 8 years. When kept in captivity, they may live even longer, reaching ages of 10 to 15 years with proper care. Their behavior is typically peaceful, and they are often seen grazing on algae and biofilm on tank surfaces, which makes them excellent for maintaining water quality in community aquariums.

Albino Plecostomus thrive in a variety of freshwater environments, preferring slow-moving waters with plenty of hiding spots such as rocks, roots, and dense vegetation. This species is primarily nocturnal, becoming more active during the night when it forages for food. They possess a sucker-like mouth that allows them to attach to surfaces and scrape algae effectively, contributing to their popularity among aquarium enthusiasts.

In terms of compatibility, Albino Plecostomus generally get along well with other peaceful fish species, but it is essential to monitor their interactions, especially in smaller tanks, as they may become territorial as they mature. Providing ample space and hiding places will help facilitate a harmonious community tank environment.
For optimal care of the Albino Plecostomus, maintain water temperatures between 24°C and 28°C, with a pH level ranging from 6.5 to 7.5. Regular water changes are crucial to keeping the environment clean and healthy. These fish are omnivorous, so a varied diet including algae wafers, sinking pellets, and fresh vegetables like cucumber or zucchini is recommended. Supplement with occasional protein sources such as bloodworms or brine shrimp to ensure they receive balanced nutrition.

When introducing Albino Plecostomus to a new aquarium, acclimate them slowly to reduce stress. Float the sealed bag in the tank for about 15-20 minutes before gradually mixing tank water into the bag. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to prevent the spread of diseases. This species is known to be hardy, but it is still susceptible to common freshwater ailments, so monitoring for signs of stress or illness is essential.

In terms of tank mates, choose other peaceful species that occupy different levels of the aquarium to minimize competition for space and food. A minimum tank size of 200 liters is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and hiding spots for this growing fish.
Albino Plecostomus are suitable for shipping due to their hardiness, but it is essential to pack them carefully to minimize stress. A packing density of 1 fish per 5 liters is advisable to ensure adequate space. Maintain shipping temperatures between 24°C and 28°C to prevent temperature shock. This species is not listed under CITES, facilitating smoother export processes.
