Blue Rainbow

The Blue Rainbow, scientifically known as Melanotaenia lacustris, is a striking freshwater fish native to the lakes and rivers of Papua New Guinea and parts of Indonesia. This species is renowned for its shimmering blue and green hues that intensify in the presence of light, making it a favorite among aquarists. Adult Blue Rainbows can reach lengths of up to 10 cm, displaying an elongated body with a slender profile, which contributes to their agile swimming abilities. Their fins are generally translucent, accentuated by subtle shades of yellow or red at the edges, further enhancing their visual appeal.

In terms of behavior, Blue Rainbows are known for their active and social nature. To successfully care for Blue Rainbows, it is essential to maintain stable water parameters. The ideal temperature range is between 24°C and 28°C, with a pH level between 6.5 and 7.5. Regular water changes and the use of a quality filtration system are crucial for keeping the water clean and well-oxygenated. Blue Rainbows are omnivorous, enjoying a varied diet that includes high-quality flake food, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia, as well as vegetable matter like spirulina.

When introducing Blue Rainbows to a new aquarium, acclimation is vital. It is recommended to float the sealed bag in the tank for about 15-20 minutes to equalize the temperature, followed by gradually mixing tank water into the bag before releasing them. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to monitor for any signs of disease before adding them to the main display.

In terms of compatibility, Blue Rainbows do well with other peaceful species such as tetras, rasboras, and small cichlids. It is advisable to keep them in groups of at least six to minimize stress and encourage natural behaviors. Providing ample swimming space and hiding spots will also enhance their well-being and reduce territorial disputes.

Blue Rainbows are well-suited for shipping due to their hardy nature. It is recommended to pack them in insulated bags with adequate water and oxygen to ensure they remain comfortable during transit. The optimal shipping temperature should be maintained around 24°C to 26°C to prevent stress. Due to their non-threatened status, they are not listed under CITES, simplifying the export process for wholesalers.
