The male Naked Micro Rasbora (Sawbwa resplendens), also known as the sawbwa barb, is a stunning freshwater fish endemic to the unique ecosystem of Inle Lake in Myanmar. This diminutive species reaches a maximum length of 3.5 cm (1.4 in) and is celebrated for its vibrant coloration, particularly in mature males which exhibit an iridescent silvery-blue body adorned with a striking red snout and red lobes on the tail fin. In contrast, females are less vivid, lacking red hues and featuring a noticeable dark pigmentation spot near the anal area.

As a member of the monotypic genus Sawbwa, the Naked Micro Rasbora stands out due to its unique anatomical features — most notably, its complete absence of scales, which gives it a naked appearance. This adaptation is believed to be an evolutionary response to the specific environmental conditions of Inle Lake. In their natural habitat, these fish prefer slow-moving waters with plenty of vegetation, providing cover from predators and suitable breeding grounds.

Behaviorally, Naked Micro Rasboras are peaceful and social fish, thriving in small schools. They exhibit interesting schooling behavior and are best kept in groups to reduce stress and promote natural behaviors. Their diet consists primarily of small invertebrates and algae, making them a quirky addition to community tanks that mimic their natural habitat.

Due to their limited distribution and specific habitat requirements, the Naked Micro Rasbora is classified as an endangered species. Conservation efforts are necessary to maintain their populations in the wild, and captive breeding programs are crucial for sustainability within the aquarium trade. This species not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of aquariums but also serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving freshwater biodiversity.
To maintain the health and vitality of the male Naked Micro Rasbora, it is essential to replicate their natural habitat as closely as possible. Optimal water parameters include a temperature range of 20-26°C, a pH level between 6.0 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water conditions. Regular water changes and filtration are crucial to keep the environment clean and reduce stress.

Feeding should consist of high-quality small pellets, flakes, and live or frozen foods such as daphnia and brine shrimp to ensure a balanced diet. These fish are peaceful and can be housed with other small, non-aggressive species, making them ideal for community tanks. When introducing them to a new aquarium, a gradual acclimation process over several hours is recommended to reduce shock.

Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks in a separate tank to monitor for diseases and ensure they are healthy before integrating them into the main display. Providing plenty of hiding spots with plants and decorations will help mimic their natural environment and reduce stress among the fish.
The male Naked Micro Rasbora is suitable for shipping, provided proper care is taken during transit. A packing density of 10-15 fish per bag is recommended to minimize stress. Ensure the temperature remains stable between 20-24°C during shipping, as they are sensitive to extreme temperature fluctuations. This species is listed under CITES Appendix II, necessitating compliance with international trade regulations.
