Rolland's Damsel (Chrysiptera rollandi) is a captivating marine fish native to the reefs of Indonesia. Known for its striking coloration, this species exhibits a vibrant blue body with a golden-yellow tail, making it a visually appealing choice for both novice and experienced aquarists. Their small size, typically reaching up to 8 cm, allows them to thrive in various tank setups, adding a lively presence to any aquarium environment.

In terms of behavior, Rolland's Damsels are known for their inquisitive nature and territorial instincts. They often establish and defend small territories within the aquarium, showcasing their vibrant colors as they interact with tank mates. These fish are generally active swimmers, darting around the tank and often exploring nooks and crannies, which mimics their natural habitat in coral reefs. Their social behavior can vary, with some individuals being more aggressive than others, particularly when establishing dominance.

Rolland's Damsels prefer warm, shallow waters typically found in coral reef ecosystems. They are often found at depths ranging from 5 to 20 meters, where they inhabit areas rich in coral structures. This species thrives in environments with plenty of hiding spots, such as crevices and overhangs, which provide shelter from potential predators. The vivid colors of Rolland's Damsel not only serve as a form of communication among themselves but also play a role in camouflage within their vibrant coral surroundings.

To successfully keep Rolland's Damsels in captivity, an understanding of their natural habitat and behaviors is essential. Providing an environment that mimics their native conditions will promote healthy growth and vibrant coloration, making them a prized addition to any marine aquarium collection.
When caring for Rolland's Damsels, maintaining proper water parameters is crucial. Ideal temperature ranges from 24°C to 28°C, with a salinity level of 1.020 to 1.025 ppt. The pH should be kept between 8.1 and 8.4, ensuring optimal health and vitality. A minimum tank size of 100 liters is recommended to provide adequate space for swimming and territory establishment.

Feeding Rolland's Damsels is relatively straightforward, as they are omnivorous. A varied diet including high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen foods such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp will keep them healthy. Regular feeding, 2-3 times a day, ensures they receive the nutrients necessary for growth and maintenance.

Compatibility is an important factor to consider; while Rolland's Damsels can coexist with a variety of fish, they may display aggressive behavior towards smaller or similarly-shaped species. It is advisable to introduce them to the tank first or ensure that they are added in pairs or groups to minimize territorial disputes. Acclimation should be done slowly to prevent stress, and a quarantine period of at least two weeks is recommended before introducing them to the main tank to monitor for any potential diseases.
Rolland's Damsels are suitable for shipping due to their hardy nature; however, care must be taken to ensure they are packed securely to minimize movement during transit. Recommended packing density is 1 fish per 2 liters of water, and maintaining a stable temperature of 24-26°C is crucial during shipping. As of now, Rolland's Damsel is not listed under CITES, allowing for easier export compliance.
