The Three-Spot Damsel (Dascyllus trimaculatus) is a popular marine fish native to the Coral Triangle, particularly found in the reefs of Bali, Indonesia. This species is easily recognized by its distinctive three dark spots on a bright blue to yellow body. The dorsal fin is extended and features a vibrant yellow hue that adds to its visual appeal, making it a favorite among aquarium enthusiasts. Typically, these fish grow to a maximum size of about 8 cm, making them suitable for various aquarium sizes.

In terms of behavior, the Three-Spot Damsel is known for its semi-aggressive nature, particularly during breeding seasons or when defending territory. They are social creatures that thrive in small groups, often seen darting in and out of crevices in the reef, which provides them shelter from predators. Their natural habitat consists of shallow reefs and lagoons, where they often associate with various anemones or coral formations, providing them both protection and hunting grounds.

The Three-Spot Damsel is also notable for its resilience, making it a suitable choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists. They adapt well to various water conditions and are known to be hardy, which contributes to their popularity in the trade. Regular water quality checks should include pH levels between 8.1 and 8.4. A minimum tank size of 100 liters is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory for these fish.

Feeding the Three-Spot Damsel is straightforward as they are omnivores. A varied diet consisting of high-quality flake food, frozen or live brine shrimp, and algae-based foods will ensure their health and vibrancy. Compatibility-wise, they can be kept with other semi-aggressive species but may exhibit territorial behavior, especially in smaller tanks. Acclimation should be gradual to reduce stress; a drip acclimation method is recommended.

Quarantine is also advisable for new arrivals to prevent the introduction of diseases to established tanks. A quarantine period of at least two weeks allows for monitoring and treatment if necessary.

The Three-Spot Damsel is suitable for shipping due to its hardiness. Recommended packing density is 1-2 fish per liter to ensure adequate space and water quality during transport. Temperature should be maintained between 22°C and 26°C during shipping to minimize stress. There are no CITES restrictions for this species, making it easier for importers to handle.
