The Golden Trevally, scientifically known as Gnatanodon speciosus, is a captivating marine fish found primarily in the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region. This species is characterized by its brilliant golden-yellow body, which can exhibit varying shades depending on environmental conditions and stress levels. Their streamlined shape and distinctive, forked tail make them agile swimmers, often seen darting in schools near coral reefs and rocky outcrops.

Natural history reveals that Golden Trevally are typically found in shallow coastal waters, often associated with coral reefs, where they hunt for prey. They are opportunistic feeders, preying on smaller fish and invertebrates. Their schooling behavior not only aids in hunting but also provides protection from larger predators. This species is known for its vibrant display during mating rituals, where males exhibit brighter colors to attract females.

For optimal care of Golden Trevally, maintain water parameters that mimic their natural habitat: a temperature range of 24-28°C, salinity of 30-35 ppt, and a pH level between 8.1 and 8.4. A minimum tank size of 300 liters is recommended to accommodate their active swimming behavior and social nature.

Feeding should consist of a varied diet rich in protein, including high-quality pellets, live or frozen foods such as shrimp, and smaller fish. Regular feeding is essential to keep them healthy and vibrant. Compatibility with other species is generally good, but caution should be exercised when introducing them to smaller or less aggressive fish, as their natural predatory instincts may kick in.

Acclimation should be gradual; float the sealed bag in the aquarium for 15-20 minutes before releasing the fish to avoid shock. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks in a separate tank to monitor for any signs of disease or stress before introducing them to the main display. Regular water quality checks are crucial for the health of Golden Trevally.

Golden Trevally are suitable for shipping but require careful handling to ensure their health during transit. Packing density should be moderate to allow for movement while minimizing stress. Ideal shipping temperatures range between 24-26°C. As of now, there are no CITES restrictions on this species, making it easier for exporters to comply with international regulations.
