The Ambon scorpionfish (Pteroidichthys amboinensis) is a fascinating species native to the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific region, particularly found around Bali, Indonesia. This species is renowned for its remarkable ability to blend into its surroundings, thanks to its textured skin and vibrant color patterns that mimic the coral and rocky substrates of its habitat. Adult scorpionfish typically reach a maximum size of around 30 cm, with their flattened bodies and wide mouths designed for ambush predation.

In terms of behavior, Ambon scorpionfish are primarily nocturnal hunters, relying on their excellent camouflage to ambush unsuspecting prey. They feed mainly on smaller fish and crustaceans, using their swift, striking movements to capture meals. Despite their fearsome appearance, these fish are not aggressive towards other species unless provoked. They often stay motionless for extended periods, making them challenging yet rewarding to observe in an aquarium setting.

Ambon scorpionfish inhabit shallow coastal waters, usually found at depths between 1 to 30 meters. They prefer areas with abundant coral cover and rock formations, where they can easily hide from both predators and prey. This species is more commonly spotted during night dives, as they become more active in the absence of bright sunlight.

Their striking appearance, combined with their unique predatory behavior, makes the Ambon scorpionfish a prized addition to marine aquariums. However, potential owners should be aware of their specific care needs to ensure a successful long-term display in captivity.

When caring for Ambon scorpionfish, it is essential to maintain stable water parameters to promote health and longevity. Ideal water temperatures should range between 24°C and 28°C, with a salinity level of 1.020 to 1.025 ppt. The pH should be kept between 8.1 and 8.4 to mimic their natural environment. A minimum tank size of 200 liters is recommended to provide ample space for swimming and hiding.

Feeding should consist of a varied diet of live or frozen foods, such as small fish, shrimp, and other marine proteins, ensuring they receive adequate nutrition. Compatibility with other species can be challenging; hence, it is recommended to house them with larger, non-aggressive fish that can tolerate their predatory nature. Careful acclimation is crucial when introducing them to a new tank; a slow drip method over several hours is advisable to reduce stress.

Quarantine is also recommended for new arrivals to prevent the introduction of pathogens to established systems. Monitoring for signs of stress, such as changes in color or behavior, will help maintain the health of these unique fish in a captive environment.

Ambon scorpionfish can be shipped effectively with proper care. They should be packed securely in insulated containers to maintain stable temperatures between 24°C and 28°C. A packing density of 1 fish per 10 liters is recommended to ensure sufficient oxygen and minimize stress during transit. This species is not listed under CITES, simplifying the export process.
