The Polkadot Boxfish (Ostracion cubicus) is a striking marine species native to tropical waters, particularly in the Coral Triangle region. This fish is easily recognizable by its distinct yellow body adorned with dark blue or black spots, giving it a polka-dotted appearance that captivates aquarists and enthusiasts alike. Adult boxfish can reach a maximum size of about 45 cm, making them a prominent attraction in aquariums.

In terms of behavior, the Polkadot Boxfish is known for its unique swimming style, using its small fins to maneuver gracefully through its environment. This fish is usually found in shallow coastal waters, preferring environments rich in coral reefs and seagrass beds. They often seek shelter among rocks and corals, where they exhibit a curious and sometimes shy demeanor. Their diet primarily consists of small invertebrates and algae, which they forage in their natural habitat.

The Polkadot Boxfish has a fascinating reproductive strategy, with females laying eggs that are fertilized by males in open water. The fry are pelagic, drifting in the currents until they develop into juvenile fish. When caring for the Polkadot Boxfish, it is essential to maintain stable water parameters. The ideal temperature range is between 24°C and 28°C, with a salinity level of 30-35 ppt. The pH should be maintained between 8.1 and 8.4. A minimum tank size of 200 liters is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and ensure a healthy environment.

Feeding the Polkadot Boxfish requires a varied diet, primarily consisting of high-quality marine pellets, frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. It's crucial to feed them small portions multiple times a day to mimic their natural foraging behavior. This species is generally compatible with other peaceful marine fish but may display territorial behavior towards similar-looking species.

Acclimation should be done gradually to minimize stress. New arrivals should be introduced to the aquarium in a well-ventilated container, allowing them to adjust to the water parameters of their new environment slowly. A quarantine period of at least two weeks is advisable to monitor for any signs of disease before introducing them to the main display tank. Regular water changes and filtration are vital to maintain water quality, as boxfish are sensitive to poor conditions.

The Polkadot Boxfish is suitable for shipping under controlled conditions. It is recommended to pack them in well-oxygenated bags with minimal water to reduce stress during transport. Temperature should be carefully monitored, as these fish are sensitive to fluctuations. CITES status is not applicable for this species, allowing for straightforward export procedures.
