The Thorny Cowfish (Tetrasomus gibbosus) is a striking marine fish that belongs to the family Ostraciidae. This species is distinguished by its boxy shape and the presence of prominent spines along its body, which give it a classic 'thorny' appearance. The coloration varies from bright yellow to greenish hues, often adorned with small blue or black spots. These vibrant colors serve as both a warning to potential predators and as a form of camouflage among the coral reefs where they reside.

In terms of behavior, Thorny Cowfish are relatively docile but can exhibit playful interactions, particularly when in groups. They are often observed swimming gracefully around coral formations, using their small fins for propulsion while their bodies remain mostly rigid. This species is primarily found in shallow waters, preferring habitats such as coral reefs, lagoons, and seagrass beds in the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific region.

The Thorny Cowfish feeds mainly on a diet of benthic invertebrates, including crustaceans and small mollusks, using its specialized mouth to graze on algae and other food sources. Ideal water parameters include a temperature range of 24-28°C, a salinity level between 1.020-1.025 ppt, and a pH balance of 8.1-8.4. It is vital to maintain high water quality with regular filtration and water changes to avoid stress and disease.

Feeding should consist of a varied diet that includes high-quality pellets, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp. These fish can be somewhat picky eaters, so providing a variety of foods is crucial to ensure proper nutrition. In terms of compatibility, Thorny Cowfish can be kept with other peaceful marine species but should be housed with caution, as their spines can cause injury to more aggressive tank mates.

Acclimation is critical when introducing Thorny Cowfish to a new environment. A slow drip acclimation method is recommended to help them adjust to new water conditions. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to monitor for diseases and ensure they are healthy before introducing them to the main display tank.

Thorny Cowfish are suitable for shipping, but care must be taken to ensure they are packed securely to minimize stress during transit. Optimal packing density should allow for adequate space to prevent injury from movement. They are sensitive to temperature fluctuations, so maintaining a stable environment during shipping is crucial. This species is not listed under CITES, which simplifies export procedures.
